Cameron Jordan could leave the Saints but his franchise QB comment spotlights Tyler Shough

Quarterback Tyler Shough arrived in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints after a very long and complicated college career. He spent seven years in college football, changing schools several times and overcoming multiple serious injuries.

Recently, Cam Jordan made comments that caught people’s attention. The veteran Saints defender highlighted how Shough improved game after game and how he responded after mistakes, showing leadership. He even believes the team might already have its next franchise quarterback. When someone like Cam makes a statement like that, it’s because he saw something in Tyler that suggests he could truly become that, not just a casual or empty show of support.

An unusual college path to the NFL

Unlike the vast majority of quarterbacks who reach the NFL after three or four seasons, Shough’s college football journey stretched across seven years, making him one of the most experienced prospects in his draft class.

Tyler arrived at the Oregon Ducks (2018-2020) as a highly regarded prospect and although he had several standout moments, he eventually lost the starting job and transferred to the Texas Tech Red Raiders (2021-2023), where he suffered several injuries that cut seasons short. He later resurfaced in 2024 with the Louisville Cardinals, where he threw for more than 3,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. That performance finally led him to the NFL Draft in 2025, where the Saints selected him to compete for the quarterback position.

Tyler, a franchise QB for the Saints?

As an NFL rookie, he had an interesting season with the New Orleans Saints in 2025. He appeared in 11 games and started 9, completing 221 of 327 passes (67.6%) for 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, with a 91.3 passer rating. He also contributed on the ground with 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns, showing the mobility to extend plays.

One of the most important moments of his season came when he took over the starting role midway through the year and led a winning streak that helped revive New Orleans’ offense, including a standout game against Tennessee in which he threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns in a comeback victory. His performance even put him in the conversation for Offensive Rookie of the Year, establishing him as one of the team’s positive surprises.

For now, during the NFL offseason, Cam Jordan’s words carry weight. The veteran defender has been a cornerstone of the franchise for years, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and establishing himself as one of the team’s emotional leaders. That’s why when he publicly suggested that Tyler Shough could become the future franchise quarterback, it had a significant impact inside the organization.

Shough has gone through difficult moments that showed his resilience, experience that now translates into steady improvement. With the support and confidence of veteran voices in the locker room, it seems a new chapter could be beginning for the Saints, where Shough is starting to show his true potential. Some might call him a “late bloomer.”

Another storyline surrounding the Saints involves veteran defensive end Cam Jordan. Reports suggest that the longtime leader of the New Orleans Saints could become a free agent if the team and the player fail to reach an agreement on a new deal before the upcoming season. If that scenario unfolds, Jordan could leave the franchise where he has spent his entire NFL career. For now, nothing has been confirmed and discussions could still change the outcome, but the possibility of Jordan hitting free agency has already sparked speculation about a major transition for the Saints.
