Caitlin Clark returns to lead the Indiana Fever and keeps the team together while the future of several teammates remains uncertain

Caitlin Clark‘s 2025 season ended abruptly after a groin injury in her 13th game, a moment that forced her off the floor but didn’t remove her from the day-to-day pulse of the team.

She has remained present in small, steady ways – foundation events, offseason bonding sessions, even relaxed rounds of golf with teammates. None of it has been loud, but the effect has been noticeable as the Fever move through the winter.

That was the backdrop when Shey Peddy, who joined Indiana late last season as the roster thinned, posted a short but unexpected message on Instagram. The photo showed five pairs of Clark’s Player Exclusive sneakers, lined up neatly as if waiting for their next owner.

“S/O @caitlinclark22 for the blessings,” Peddy wrote.

Why veteran recognition matters more than the sneakers themselves

Peddy‘s reaction resonated because of who she is, not because of the shoes. The veteran guard has built her career on persistence and defense, earning Athletes Unlimited’s 2025 Defensive Player of the Year while finishing 12th on the leaderboard with 3,741 points.

She stacked up six double-figure scoring nights there, including a 20-point performance against Team Caldwell, and secured a spot on AU’s All-Defensive Team.

Her WNBA season told another story of reliability. She started the year with the Los Angeles Sparks, then arrived in Indiana as a late-season addition and immediately became a trusted presence in the rotation.

In 17 games for the Fever she reached double figures seven times, highlighted by a 20-point burst against Washington as Indiana fought to stay afloat in the playoff race.

Her final averages – 5.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists – don’t reflect the steadiness she provided a roster repeatedly jolted by injuries.

That is why her public thank-you mattered. Veteran players rarely offer praise casually, especially toward someone still establishing herself in the league.

It is easy for a young star to draw headlines when she’s scoring or shredding defenses. The harder part is earning the trust of teammates during the quiet months, when the league goes still and uncertainty fills the air.
