Los Angeles Lakers unlikely to have Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves for their playoff series against the Rockets

The NBA Play-In Tournament reaches its final crossroads tonight, as the last two #8 seeds will be decided. In the Eastern Conference, the winner of the Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic clash will earn a date with the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. Out West, the stakes are just as high: the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns are fighting for the right to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

While the Play-In provides the drama, the first-round schedule is already set for an epic showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets. This series marks the return of a legendary rivalry: LeBron James versus Kevin Durant.

These two icons haven’t met in the postseason since the 2018 NBA Finals, yet they remain the only duo in NBA history to face off 10 or more times in the playoffs while both maintaining a scoring average of over 30 points per game.

Lakers Injury Crisis: Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves Likely Out for First Round

The Lakers’ championship aspirations have taken a massive hit before the opening tip. While fans held out hope for a quick recovery, the latest NBA injury update is grim. Lakers head coach JJ Redick initially labeled both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as “out indefinitely,” but ESPN’s Dave McMenamin has since reported that the team does not expect either star to return at any point during the series against Houston.

Both players are dealing with Grade 2 muscle strains suffered just two weeks ago. Medical experts typically suggest a multi-week recovery for such injuries, making a return during the first round a high-risk gamble for a potential re-injury.

This leaves a massive void in the Lakers’ rotation; Doncic just finished the season as the NBA scoring leader for the second time in three years, and Reaves was in the middle of a career-best season, improving his scoring average for the fourth consecutive year. Without their primary playmakers, the Lakers find themselves as heavy underdogs against a Rockets team that added Durant specifically to exploit these moments.

LeBron’s “Superman” Mission: Can the 41-Year-Old King Save the Season?

With his top two co-stars sidelined, the burden falls squarely on the shoulders of the 41-year-old LeBron James. Despite his age, LeBron’s regular-season efficiency remains staggering, averaging 21 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 51.7% from the field. However, to survive a hungry Houston squad, James will need to summon the “Superman” version of himself-reminiscent of the 2018 Cleveland run where he willed an undermanned roster to the Finals.

The stakes are higher than just a playoff advancement. A loss here would mark the third consecutive first-round exit for the Lakers, a rare blemish on James’ illustrious career. There is also the lingering question of retirement. As LeBron enters the twilight of his career, many hope he returns for at least one more season to receive a farewell tour similar to those of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. For a player who has redefined longevity in sports, seeing him go out on a first-round sweep would be a somber ending to a legendary story.
