Boras cools Yankees’ Cody Bellinger market: “Belli’s not really interested”

Cody Bellinger is one of the hottest free agents this offseason, with more and more teams joining the list of suitors, and that is why he is one of the most talked about topics in MLB rumors ahead of the start of 2026

Although the Yankees have already put an offer on the table, negotiations are proceeding cautiously, while other teams are watching closely. Between Scott Boras’ puns and alternate plans in New York, the fate of the All-Star outfielder is far from resolved.

Where will Cody Bellinger play in 2026?

The Yankees broke the winter silence on January 2, 2026, by submitting a formal offer for Cody Bellinger. For a franchise with World Series aspirations, retaining a proven bat seemed a logical priority after the outfielder’s solid 2025 season, in which he hit 29 home runs and drove in 98 runs

However, the process has not been straightforward, as according to insider Mark Feinsand, the New York management has no intention of raising its offer just to close the deal

“The Yankees are standing firm with their price, not wanting to bid against themselves for Bellinger,” the analyst wrote, making it clear that there is little room for maneuver.

Scott Boras and a market full of winks

As expected, Scott Boras appeared to stoke the conversation. Speaking to MLB.com, Bellinger’s agent offered a speech full of puns, indirectly mentioning contending teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Angels, Giants and Phillies.

Beyond the light-hearted tone, the message was clear: the market is open and there are multiple options for a five-tool player. Although Boras closed with irony by saying that “Belli is not very interested“, the hint suggests the opposite: there are expectations of a long and competitive contract.

Yankees’ plan B if no deal is reached

From the Bronx environment, patience is also part of the strategy. The previous moves, retaining Trent Grisham and extending Amed Rosario, seem more like preparatory steps. The main target remains Bellinger, but not at any cost.

If the former National League MVP signs with another team, the Yankees are already considering alternatives. Jasson Dominguez could take on a more permanent role in left field, while prospect Spencer Jones would have a real opportunity during spring training in Tampa beginning in February.

While Bellinger evaluates his future, another name is gaining traction in the market: Nolan Arenado. Recent reports link the third baseman with the Los Angeles Angels, amid trade rumors or possible release by the Cardinals. For the Angels, adding leadership and defense is key after an inconsistent 2025.
