Blow to Canelo Alvarez’s legacy: “He lost to the elite, I hope he is not beaten by mediocre fighters”

The doubts about the legacy of Canelo Alvarez‘s career have always been a hot topic among his critics due to the opponents he has faced.

Now, with the unexpected defeat against Terence Crawford, criticism of the Guadalajara boxer and his place in boxing history is intensifying.

Saul Alvarez is not “an all-time great”

Joe Calzaghe, a former British boxer who was super middleweight champion of the WBC, WBO and IBF and retired with an unbeaten record of 46-0 in 2008, is the one who claims that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (63-3-2) is not among the best in history.

“I wouldn’t put him as an all-time great because he lost his most important fights. He’s still a great fighter. He’s had great wins, but against the elite fighters, he lost, didn’t he?

“He lost to Mayweather and I definitely think he lost one of the fights against Golovkin. He’s had a great career. If you keep on fighting, you’re going to lose, time catches up with everyone. I just hope he doesn’t go on too long and end up being beaten by mediocre fighters,” Calzaghe told Boxing Scene.

What’s next for Canelo Alvarez

After the defeat to Terence Crawford (42-0), Canelo underwent surgery on his left elbow in October and has not declared his next step in his career, where he would be under contract for another year with Sheikh Turki Alalshikh.
