The baseball world has come to a standstill to bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures. Bill Mazeroski, the man who starred in the most memorable moment in Major League Baseball history, died on Friday, February 20, 2026 at the age of 89.

Bill Mazeroski cause of death

Although the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and his family confirmed his death, no specific medical causes have been detailed beyond natural complications associated with his advanced age. Team president Bob Nutting expressed the city’s feelings by describing “Maz” not only as an exceptional athlete, but also as an extraordinary human being who defined the identity of the franchise for decades.

Maz was one of a kind, a true Pirates legend, a National Baseball Hall of Famer and one of the best defensive second basemen the game has ever seen

“His name will always be linked to the most important home run in baseball history and the 1960 World Series championship, but I will remember him most for the person he was,” explained the club president.

Bill Mazeroski’s legacy

Mazeroski’s name is etched in gold for a feat that no other player has ever repeated in the same circumstances: to hit a walk-off home run in the seventh game of a World Series.

On October 13, 1960, at Forbes Field, Mazeroski faced the mighty New York Yankees. In the ninth inning, with the score tied, he sent the ball over the wall to give Pittsburgh an unlikely championship, leaving the New York legends on the field and creating the most cinematic moment in the sport.

Bill Mazeroski was a seven-time All-Star and his No. 9 is retired at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park, where a statue immortalizes his triumphant career after that legendary home run.
