Bailey Zappe gets the call as Cleveland’s No. 2 while Shedeur Sanders finally steps into his first NFL start

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has officially named Bailey Zappe as the backup to rookie starter Shedeur Sanders for Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, solidifying the team’s Week 12 quarterback plan.

The decision comes as Sanders prepares for his first NFL start, a long-awaited moment after Dillon Gabriel was ruled out with a concussion. Zappe, 26, was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

His promotion gives Sanders a steady veteran presence behind him as the Browns look to salvage their season. Zappe’s last NFL appearance came in Week 18 of the 2024 campaign, when Stefanski handed him the reins in a 35-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s the most important role Zappe has had since leaving New England

The former New England Patriots quarterback logged 14 games and eight starts across two seasons in Foxborough before joining Cleveland in the 2024 offseason. Since then, he has seen minimal on-field action, making Sunday a significant moment in his return to meaningful duty – even in a backup role.

As for Sanders, the rookie will get a full-game opportunity after being thrust into action last week against Baltimore. In the 23-16 loss, he completed 25% of his passes for 47 yards, added 16 rushing yards, and threw one interception.

Shedeur is facing his first major opportunity as a professional

Despite the rough outing, Sunday offers the former Colorado star a clean slate and a chance to show the Browns what he can do with a full week of preparation.

The Browns, currently seeking their third win of the season, will kick off against the Raiders at 4:05 p.m. ET. For Sanders, it’s not just another game – it’s the realization of his dream to start an NFL contest, made even more meaningful with Zappe ready to support him from the sidelines.
