Anthony Volpe receives brutal Spring Training news as Yankees’ patience wears thin

One of the stories to follow throughout all of 2026 will be that of Anthony Volpe with the New York Yankees-not without first being one of the last to take an at-bat in 2025, when he was showered with boos from the Yankees faithful in the Bronx.

A year after reaching the World Series, the Bronx Bombers saw their season end in the American League Division Series, and that doesn’t mean Volpe will return immediately-he’s currently recovering from a shoulder injury that will keep him unavailable for Aaron Boone, one of his biggest defenders.

Anthony Volpe faces pressure and uncertainty in 2026

“The chip I have on my shoulder has been there for my whole life, my whole career,” Volpe told Gary Phillips of the Daily News. “I just can’t wait to go back out there and play and feel good and perform and help the team win, because at the end of the day, if I do that and I play the way I know I can play, everything will take care of itself.

“I appreciate the accountability,” he continued. “I appreciate everything that comes with being the shortstop for the New York Yankees, so I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Volpe was once considered the long-term solution at shortstop in New York, and while his statements are encouraging, it doesn’t mean the organization or the fanbase should get overly excited about his MLB comeback.

We can’t rule out that his injured shoulder will affect his defense, which has been inconsistent throughout his career and has fallen below average in recent seasons. Across 1,886 plate appearances, Volpe has posted a .222/.283/.379 slash line, and while his glove was once considered MLB-average, there’s no guarantee it will rebound in 2026.

Since last season, real competition has arrived with the addition of José Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays. Now, according to reports, Aaron Boone will also experiment with Ryan McMahon to evaluate his options at shortstop heading into the season.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Yankees are committing to McMahon at the position-it’s simply about exploring every viable possibility in a crucial year. Still, Anthony Volpe’s job security is far from guaranteed.

This could mark the beginning of the end for a former top prospect who once carried massive expectations in the Bronx… or perhaps it will be the season where he reinvents himself and finally reconnects with a Yankees fanbase that has grown increasingly impatient.
