Alex Cora breaks silence on Alex Bregman’s future with Red Sox

The future of Alex Bregman remains one of the most talked about topics in MLB. While rumors grow, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora decided to speak candidly about the situation of the third baseman, making it clear that the final decision is solely in the hands of the player.

Free agency always brings uncertainty, and in the case of Alex Bregman it is no exception. The 31-year-old third baseman is coming off a solid 2025 season with Boston, in which he hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games. These numbers support his value within the roster.

When questioned by the media about the state of the relationship between Bregman and the organization, Alex Cora was direct but cautious:

You have to ask him. The ball is in his court

Cora hinted that there are restrictions when it comes to free agents, especially in contractual matters. However, he did not hide his admiration for the player or the impact he had on the team last season.

We’ve been working together to see what happens, but obviously it’s a different offseason for Alex. You know how I feel about him. Last year he met all expectations and even exceeded some that many did not expect

Do the Red Sox need to keep Bregman?

Not everyone agrees that Boston should go to extreme lengths to sign him. Former MLB player Chris Gimenez noted that the team has enough young talent and recent moves that could make up for a possible departure.

According to Gimenez, although Bregman brings leadership and experience, the Red Sox are in a strong position after finishing the 2025 season with an 89-73 record and advancing to the wild card, despite losing to the Yankees.

The situation of Alex Bregman represents much more than just a signing. For Boston, it is about defining the balance between experience and youth. For the player, it is probably the last big contract of his career. As Alex Cora rightly said, “the ball is in his court“, and the whole MLB is waiting for his decision.
