Alex Bregman signs with Chicago Cubs: Inside the millionaire contract after leaving free agency

The uncertainty about the future of one of the most sought-after and sought-after players in this winter market, Alex Bregman, is over. After news and rumors about alleged negotiations with different franchises that wanted him in their squad, the player has agreed to join the Chicago Cubs.

After a solid campaign in 2025, in which he slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and was selected to his third All-Star Game, the 32-year-old decided to place himself back in free agency at the end of the season.

He knew he was one of the most attractive hitters in MLB and that offers would not be lacking. One of his objectives was to obtain a proposal that exceeded $150 million, an amount he was not going to receive from Boston.

As a free agent, Bregman could have asked for a figure in excess of $100 million. In his case, after reaching 120 with the Red Sox, he had the possibility of increasing his rate to 200 million, but he did not want to go to such a high amount because many teams would decline to negotiate due to his age.

Finally, the Cubs and the slugger agreed to a five-year, $175 million contract on January 10, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Did the Yankees and Mets miscalculate?

The Mets have been criticized and questioned for getting rid of several key players in the offseason without major signings in between. It was revealed that the organization would wait until the critical points of the market to seek top-level signings. There was talk that they would go for Bregman, but they did not imagine that the Cubs would move faster than them.

Something similar happened with the Yankees. The organization focused so much on Cody Bellinger’s services that it neglected its plan C, as Bo Bichette became plan B. They tried to wait until a last negotiation with Bellinger, however, neither one nor the other was of any use to them. It seems that now they will have to go for Bichette as the only batting solution.
