Alcaraz targets Sinner in pursuit of a title that could reshape tennis history

At just 22 years old, Carlos Alcaraz is already challenging the boundaries of modern men’s tennis, and now he has a new, audacious target.

He’s zeroing in on a championship against Jannik Sinner that would not only define this season but also cement his legacy in the sport’s record books.

Their rivalry, arguably the most compelling in men’s tennis right now, has escalated significantly in 2025.

They clashed in three Grand Slam finals, a feat unmatched in the Open Era, and traded blows on surfaces that demand very different skill sets.

And at the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin on Sunday, November 16, Jannik Sinner overtook Carlos Alcaraz in the latest chapter of their rivalry, defeating him 7-6(4), 7-5 to clinch the year-end title.

The defeat has since sparked something for Alcaraz.

A rivalry built for history

Alcaraz has spoken openly about the respect and motivation he draws from his rival. As he put it, “I think the respect we have for each other and the good relationship we have off the court […] is great.”

That mindset has paid dividends. Alcaraz has consistently raised his game in their biggest matches.

At the 2025 French Open, he orchestrated one of the most remarkable comebacks in major final history, rallying from two sets down and saving three match points to defeat Sinner.

And in the US Open final, he overpowered Sinner once again to reclaim the No. 1 ranking.

Still, their head-to-head is razor thin, and the stakes remain sky-high. Every time they meet, the match doesn’t just feel like another final. It feels like a chapter in a larger narrative, one that could shape a new era in men’s tennis.

The deeper significance behind Alcaraz’s next goal

For Alcaraz, a victory over Sinner in another high-stakes final would do more than add another trophy.

It would reinforce his dominance in this rivalry and elevate the entire arc of their careers.

He’s already extended his lead in “Big Titles”, a combined count of Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000s, and other marquee championships, by defeating Sinner in Rome.

But beyond the numbers, he’s speaking to impact. With their rivalry pushing tennis ratings and rewiring expectations, Alcaraz clearly sees more than just immediate glory. He wants his name etched into tennis lore.

That ambition is matched by the pressure. After losing the year-end No. 1 race to Sinner and admitting that the burden of overtaking him “killed” him at times, Alcaraz has said he’s refocused his priorities, aiming less for rankings and more for performances.
