Alarm bells are ringing over the Browns’ quarterback situation: Benching Watson for Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns may not have played a meaningful snap yet, but the franchise’s quarterback situation is already turning into one of the NFL’s biggest talking points.

What was supposed to be a fresh start for Deshaun Watson has quickly become a growing controversy, with analysts and fans increasingly calling for rookie Shedeur Sanders to take control of the offense sooner rather than later.

Pressure has been building around Watson ever since Cleveland made the blockbuster trade for the former Houston Texans star in 2022.

The Browns handed Watson a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million, expecting him to become the long-term answer under center.

Instead, injuries, inconsistency and off-field scrutiny have prevented him from delivering at the level the organization envisioned.

Now, with Sanders arriving in Cleveland carrying enormous attention after his high-profile college career under father Deion Sanders, the conversation has changed dramatically.

NFL analyst Derek Brown did not hold back when discussing the Browns’ quarterback battle this week.

“Start Shedeur Sanders,” Brown said. “Don’t let Deshaun Watson see the field. Period. Full stop. Don’t care.”

That blunt statement reflects a growing belief among some NFL observers that Cleveland should stop forcing the Watson experiment and instead focus on developing a younger quarterback with upside.

Sanders enters the NFL after a productive run at Colorado, where he became one of college football’s most recognizable players.

Known for his poise, accuracy and confidence, Sanders helped transform Colorado into a national attraction while playing in one of the sport’s brightest spotlights.

While rookie quarterbacks are rarely handed starting jobs immediately without competition, many around the league believe Sanders’ maturity and experience in pressure situations could accelerate his path onto the field.

Browns face difficult decision with Watson’s future uncertain

The Browns’ coaching staff has publicly attempted to calm speculation surrounding the quarterback depth chart.

However, reports from offseason workouts have only intensified questions about Watson’s standing within the organization.

Brown also pushed back against the early narratives suggesting Watson had already separated himself in the competition.

“They’re in t-shirts and shorts,” Brown said. “He ain’t leading nothing. They haven’t had real practices yet. And now that we have OTAs opening up, oh, they’re splitting reps. But I was told Deshaun Watson was definitively ahead and he was QB1! So let’s cut the crap.”

The frustration surrounding Watson extends beyond just performance concerns. Since arriving in Cleveland, he has struggled to regain the elite form he displayed during his Texans years.

Injuries have limited his availability, and the Browns’ offense has often looked stagnant during key stretches.

Last season, Cleveland cycled through multiple quarterbacks because of injuries and inconsistency, which created instability across the offense. Even with a talented defense and playoff-caliber roster, the team failed to establish continuity at the most important position in sports.

Meanwhile, Sanders represents something the Browns have desperately lacked for years: optimism tied to long-term potential.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski now faces a delicate balancing act. Benching Watson outright would create headlines across the league because of the massive financial investment tied to the veteran quarterback.

At the same time, delaying Sanders’ development if he clearly outperforms Watson could create tension within both the locker room and fanbase.

The Browns also understand the pressure of competing in a loaded AFC North that features Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and a Pittsburgh Steelers team expected to improve.

Cleveland cannot afford another season of uncertainty at quarterback if it hopes to seriously contend.

For now, the Browns insist the competition remains open. But as training camp approaches, the noise surrounding Watson and Sanders is only getting louder, and Cleveland’s quarterback drama may just be getting started.
