Aaron Boone’s future as Yankees manager is once again in doubt

The future of Aaron Boone as manager of the New York Yankees is once again under public scrutiny. Despite having managed the team for eight seasons, criticism for the constant postseason failures continues to mount.

For authoritative voices within the club’s environment, his continuity does not respond so much to the results, but to a profound change in the way the organization defines success.

Michael Kay questions the post-Steinbrenner era

One of the strongest remarks came from Michael Kay, a longtime Yankees commentator, who said that Boone would not have survived under the standards set by George Steinbrenner. “If he is not successful this year, he could be fired with one year remaining,” Kay said, recalling that in the past the only acceptable success was winning the World Series.

Since Steinbrenner’s death, no executive has publicly set that goal as an obligation, which has changed the pressure on the managerial position.

Frequent playoffs, disappointing results

In numerical terms, Boone has taken the Yankees to the playoffs in seven of his eight seasons, but October performance has been inconsistent. The most recent example was the 2025 American League Division Series, where New York fell 3-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays, being clearly outplayed.

Toronto scored 34 runs to the Yankees’ 19 and had 50 hits to 34. In addition, the starting rotation – Luis Gil, Max Fried and Carlos Rodon – had a combined ERA of over 16 in the first three games, reflecting a worrying lack of preparedness.

Boone’s decisions under the microscope

Criticism also focused on the handling of the squad. Boone was questioned for keeping Devin Williams and Anthony Volpe in high-pressure situations, despite their poor performance, as well as for prematurely removing Gerrit Cole in the wild-card round.

Analysts such as Jack Curry and Paul O’Neill have pointed out that many decisions seem to respond to office guidelines rather than reading the game.

Failure or functional manager for the organization?

Despite the discontent, Kay acknowledges that Boone plays a key role: he handles media pressure, protects the locker room and is a solid institutional figure. If the criterion is to compete every year and qualify for the playoffs, Boone has more than fulfilled it.

With his contract nearing its expiration and a negative 25-32 streak since June 1, doubts are mounting. Names such as Joe Girardi, Carlos Beltran, Phil Nevin, Joe Maddon and Dan Fiorito are already circulating as possible replacements.

The underlying question remains the same: what do the Yankees understand by success today? The answer could mark the immediate fate of Aaron Boone and the direction of the franchise.
