Aaron Boone plans to use key Yankees early in Spring Training

The New York Yankees want to put what happened in 2025 behind them, and apparently within the organization, there is no time to waste. At least that’s what it looks like they’re planning from Tampa Bay, Florida, where preparations for the 2026 season are already underway.

It’s precisely this coming February 20 when the Yankees will take the field for the first time this year, with the team’s first game taking place at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, home of the Baltimore Orioles.

Details emerge about the Yankees’ first Spring Training game

A few days ago, fans learned that the starting pitcher would be Elmer Rodríguez, and now Chris Kirschner of The Athletic has reported that Aaron Boone and his staff also plan to use standout players in this first of 32 games that make up this preseason.

The reporter mentions players such as catcher Austin Wells, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., shortstop José Caballero, and third baseman Amed Rosario. Some of them may not play the full game, but they will certainly see action.

In Wells’ case, he’s looking to establish himself as one of the best catchers in all of MLB, a goal that seems entirely achievable.

For Chisholm, he has big aspirations for 2026, knowing he’ll become a free agent.

Meanwhile, Caballero could become the starting shortstop until Anthony Volpe recovers from his shoulder injury. Fans can expect the former Tampa Bay Rays player to act as the No. 1 at the position, though this could turn into a long-term plan.

Amed Rosario has the profile of a player ready for action, even though third base now fully belongs to Ryan McMahon-though an injury could change those plans.

The decision to use key players right from the start of Spring Training only confirms that within the Yankees organization, they want to make the most of every moment on the field-in other words, there is no time to lose.
