Yankees legend explodes on social media after TV analyst comparison during World Series

The definition of the World Series between the Dodgers and Blue Jays was so intense and exciting that to this day debates are still being generated over various events that took place at Rogers Centre SkyDome. The latest one generated on social networks was about a historical controversy fueled by the Fox broadcast booth. It was a comparison made by announcer Joe Davis, which ignited the ire among baseball fans and a furious reaction from one of the New York Yankees’ greatest legends, Reggie Jackson.

The controversy erupted when Davis pointed out on air that Muncy’s postseason home run total equaled Babe Ruth’s World Series home run total. While the raw numbers were correct (Muncy finished with 16 postseason HRs, one more than Ruth’s 15 in the World Series), the omission of historical context proved to be an unforgivable mistake for purists of the game.

Reggie Jackson’s outrage on social media

Reggie Jackson was quick to use his account on X to launch a scathing criticism. The Yankees legend pointed out that equating Muncy’s record, accumulated over multiple rounds of playoffs, with the numbers of Ruth or Mantle in the World Series is nonsense.

“Ruth hit 15 HRs, all World Series home runs, Mickey had 18 World Series HRs

Jackson emphasized the difference between the eras: “Ruth hit 15 HRs, all World Series home runs, Mickey had 18 World Series HRs. If they had played 4 or 5 series in those days like today, Babe and Mickey would have 50-100 HRs. Get it right, please. It’s embarrassing.”

With this statement, Jackson stressed that, in Ruth’s era, the World Series was the only postseason, whereas modern players accumulate statistics over several divisional and championship series. Comparing numbers from different game structures, according to the legend, ignores the context and difficulty of historical achievements.

Dodgers’ World Series win over Blue Jays questioned

Beyond the error and the controversy generated on social media by the statistics of some players, what cannot be denied is that the Dodgers made history and dazzled everyone, or almost everyone, as there were some detractors who questioned the achievement of a new title for the Los Angeles team.

The questioning of the Dodgers’ victory came from Caleb Joseph, former catcher and Sportsnet commentator, who claimed that “the best team did not win”, unleashing a wave of reactions among fans and experts.

“It’s going to sound like an excuse, and I don’t care. I think the best team didn’t win this series. The Blue Jays played contagious baseball, which connected with the fans, and it’s disheartening to see that the best team didn’t win the title,” explained an indignant Joseph, who generated debate on social media and kept the flame burning in a game that seems far from over and continues off the field.
