Yankees eye reunion with elite pitcher traded away in Juan Soto deal

The New York Yankees might be close to landing one of the best pitchers on the market – a move that could help position them as a true contender heading into the 2026 MLB season.

According to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, Michael King has the Orioles, Red Sox, and Yankees among the teams he’s considering, with a decision expected soon.

“Free agent righthander Michael King has the Red Sox, Yankees, and Orioles among the teams he is considering, a major league source told the Globe on Sunday,” Abraham writes. “King, 30, was 18-12 with a 3.10 earned run average and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings the last two seasons for the Padres.”

King, who endured an injury-marred 2025 season, could keep his New England connections by signing with the Red Sox or return to the organization that drafted and developed him before trading him in the deal that brought Juan Soto to the Yankees.

King is regarded as one of the top pitchers available in free agency (behind posted Japanese star Tatsuya Imai), and signing either would be a massive addition.

A Top-Tier Arm Named Michael King

Michael King found plenty of success as a reliever in New York, but his transition to a full-time starter has turned him into one of the most sought-after arms on the market. Across 322.2 innings and 64 starts in his career, King has posted a 3.35 ERA.
