Yankees bet on continuity and retain Paul Blackburn

The Yankees made it clear during the offseason that they trust the core of their roster to compete for the World Series in 2026. That philosophy was again reflected in the renewal of Paul Blackburn, who will remain in the Bronx after agreeing to a one-year, $2 million contract, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The agreement includes performance incentives, as Blackburn could earn additional bonuses for the number of innings pitched throughout the season. The signing reinforces the idea that the Yankees are looking for stability and depth rather than big shakeups in the market.

Blackburn’s journey from the Mets to the Yankees

Paul Blackburn arrived at the Yankees last August, after the Mets designated him for assignment. At that time, his season was not the best, and his numbers reflected difficulties in staying as a starter.

With the Mets, Blackburn struggled with consistency and finished the year with a 6.23 ERA, the highest of his career. However, his role changed with the Yankees, where he was used primarily as a low-leverage reliever and depth option.

A promising end to the season for Blackburn

Despite the overall numbers, the end of 2025 left positive feelings. In September, Blackburn threw 10 innings in which he allowed only six hits and struck out 14 batters. That stretch caught the attention of the coaching staff, especially after some adjustments to his repertoire.

The Yankees’ pitching department worked with Blackburn to use his sinker and cutter more frequently. These changes resulted in better contact quality metrics, an indicator that the organization tends to value when evaluating pitchers.

Although the sample size is small, the club believes those adjustments could translate into greater effectiveness if sustained over a full season. The expectation is that Blackburn can contribute as a long reliever or swingman, a role that provides flexibility to the bullpen.

A move reminiscent of other successful cases in New York

In New York, there is a recent precedent that invites optimism. After a quiet spell in 2023, Luke Weaver found stability with the Yankees and went on to sign a major free agent contract. The front office hopes that Blackburn can follow a similar path.

However, this renewal does not completely calm the unease of some fans, especially after the elimination in the American League Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays and the significant moves made by other East teams.

For now, Paul Blackburn‘s continuity represents a low-risk gamble that seeks to reinforce pitching depth. It is not an immediate game-changing move, but it could become a wise decision if the pitcher confirms his best version in 2026.
