Xavier Gipson pays dearly for mistake against Steelers as Jets make toughest decision

What seemed poised to be the New York Jets’ first victory of the 2025 season turned into heartbreak after a costly mistake by Xavier Gipson, a misstep that ultimately cost him his job. Head coach Aaron Glenn has made it clear he demands a flawless, fully focused team from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. Unfortunately for Gipson, that standard wasn’t met, and now he is no longer part of the franchise.

Glenn has consistently stressed that he wants his players performing at the highest level and has openly warned that those who make errors leading to defeats will not remain with the team. His stance wasn’t merely talk, Gipson has now become the first casualty of this uncompromising approach.

According to multiple sources, the wide receiver and return specialist was already under scrutiny for a critical mistake in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a miscue that snatched victory away from the Jets and handed it to their opponent.

A costly fumble

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Jets leading and victory in sight, disaster struck. On a kickoff return, Gipson fumbled the ball, a blunder that swung momentum dramatically. The Steelers capitalized, scoring twice in a span of just 50 seconds to pull off a stunning comeback and secure a 34-32 win.

The error not only crushed Gipson’s personal aspirations but also shattered the team’s hopes of starting the season on a high note.

In his postgame press conference, Glenn did not hide his frustration or the possible consequences for Gipson.

The one thing to me that turned this game is, man, we can’t have turnovers.”… “We can’t do it. We have to be a more disciplined team. There were some penalties that happened in that game that were true discipline issues and, again, that’s something that will be addressed because you will not be on the field with this team if you’re going to cause us to lose games, if you’re going to cause issues like that.

Glenn said.

Gipson had spent the preseason competing with rookie Jamaal Pritchett for the role of kick returner and backup receiver. Pritchett remains on the practice squad but is now expected to be promoted to the active roster following Gipson’s release.

Signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Gipson made an immediate splash with a memorable punt return touchdown against the Buffalo Bills. However, since that highlight, his contributions have been minimal. Last season, he recorded just six receptions for 39 yards and one touchdown.

This decision by Glenn may seem controversial, extreme, or even necessary, depending on perspective. What’s certain is that it sets a precedent for the entire roster: with the Jets, anything less than 100% effort and focus will not be tolerated. Players now know that a single costly mistake could put their careers with the franchise on the line.
