Xabi Alonso says no to European champion in crisis as he waits for a better offer

Xabi Alonso is once again the protagonist in the European coaching market. The former Real Madrid coach is said to have turned down a formal offer to become the new coach of Olympique de Marseille, amid growing rumors linking him with a possible future at Liverpool

According to reports from RMCSport, Alonso immediately declined the proposal from the French club, who are in the midst of a search for a new head coach following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi. The Spaniard’s decision is said to be motivated by the lack of institutional stability and internal tensions in the Marseille club’s management.

Xabi Alonso’s time at Real Madrid

Alonso left his post at Real Madrid in January this year, just six months after taking over as head coach at the start of the 2025-26 season, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. His departure came after a series of episodes that marked a turning point in his short spell in charge of the Spanish giants.

One of the most talked about moments was the 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. Days later, a video went viral in which Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo apparently ignored Alonso’s instruction to perform the guard of honour to the opposing team, a gesture that reflected the loss of authority of the coach within the dressing room.

Shortly afterwards, the club announced his departure, with Alvaro Arbeloa taking over on an interim basis.

Marseille, a discarded project

According to information published in France, Alonso is now looking for a project with greater sporting and institutional solidity, moving away from clubs embroiled in internal conflicts or disputes at the top of the management. This stance is said to have been decisive in ruling out Marseille, despite the club’s interest in having a coach of his profile.

Liverpool appears on the horizon

Meanwhile, Alonso’s name is again linked with the Liverpool bench. The English side are in the second season of Arne Slot, who, while not in immediate danger, has been questioned for not repeating the level shown in the previous campaign.

From England, Alonso is seen as a heavyweight alternative should the board decide to start a new cycle at Anfield, which will keep the Spanish coach in the media spotlight in the coming months.

Key facts

  • Xabi Alonso rejected the chance to become Olympique de Marseille coach
  • The main reason would be the internal instability of the French club
  • His time at Real Madrid lasted just six months
  • Liverpool appears as a possible future destination
  • The coach is looking for a stable and sustainable project
