The Philadelphia Eagles’ offseason is filled with more questions than answers. Among the most pressing issues is who will be their new defensive coordinator. Vic Fangio’s situation is one of the most volatile in the league, and a new report has just added fuel to the fire.
After crushing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles’ defense left much to be desired in the 2016 season.

While it wasn’t one of the worst, its performance was far from what it had shown just a year earlier. The statistics for the unit led by Fangio say everything the fans are lamenting:
- No. 13 in yards per game: 314
- No. 8 in yards per game by passing: 189
- No. 22 in yards per game by rushing: 189.8
- No. 5 in points per game: 19.1
- No. 13 in total sacks: 42
The situation demands a change of direction. Instead, the team is in limbo, unsure whether Vic Fangio will return for another year or hang up his whistle for good.
Fangio’s uncertain situation with the Eagles
On February 1, The Philly Voice beat reporter Jimmy Kempski revealed that the Eagles were considering Jim Schwartz or Jonathan Gannon for the defensive coordinator position.
Sources within the team told Kempski that the Eagles were preparing for Fangio’s eventual retirement. However, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo partially refuted this.
Garafolo confirmed that Fangio’s return is uncertain. However, he stated, his return “It’s been leaning to the positive recently, but could change again.”
The insider ended by admitting that “The Eagles haven’t confirmed or denied anything to this point,” leaving fans in suspense.
Fangio would be a painful loss for the Eagles
Vic Fangio is one of the most experienced coordinators in the NFL. He began his career as a defensive coordinator in 1995 with the Panthers and has since led the defenses of the Colts, Texans, 49ers, Bears, and Dolphins.
He joined the Eagles in the 2024 season after Sean Desai’s departure. Upon his arrival, he transformed the defense into a cornerstone of their Super Bowl victory, earning him the 2024 Defensive Coordinator of the Year award.
Now, the Eagles face a crucial offseason. They must resolve the Fangio dilemma, have a strong draft, and play smart in free agency to return to the Super Bowl.
