Will Stefon Diggs be suspended for the NFL playoffs? Latest updates on Patriots star’s legal case

New England Patriots star wide receiver Stefon Diggs finds himself at the center of a serious legal and professional crossroads just as the team gears up for a critical NFL playoff push.

Authorities have charged Diggs with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery in connection with a Dec. 2 incident in Massachusetts, putting both his personal reputation and postseason availability under intense scrutiny.

The allegations stem from an encounter with a woman who worked as Diggs‘ private chef, according to local police reports and court filings.

Prosecutors assert that the woman claimed Diggs struck her and then applied pressure to her neck in his home, making it difficult for her to breathe.

The report says she feared she might have “blacked out” during the episode.

Diggs, 32, has been a pivotal figure for the Patriots this season, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards in his first year with the franchise after signing a threeyear, $69 million deal in March.

New England is currently second in the AFC with a 133 record and has a chance to secure a firstround bye if they win in Week 18 and the Denver Broncos lose.

In a statement released by the Patriots, the organization acknowledged the allegations while affirming its support for the veteran wideout.

“Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary,” the team said, adding that it would have no further comment out of respect for all parties involved.

Diggs‘ legal team has echoed the denial, with his attorney maintaining that the accusations are unfounded and tied to an unresolved financial dispute with the alleged victim.

The arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 23, just two days before the AFC Championship Game.

However, reports indicate the judge is considering moving that date to March, an alteration that could have significant implications for the Patriots‘ playoff roster.

Mounting legal scrutiny as Patriots chase postseason success

The timing of these developments could not be more consequential.

With the playoffs looming, the NFL is now in a position to determine whether any disciplinary action, including suspension or paid leave under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, might be imposed before or during the postseason.

League officials have publicly stated they are aware of the situation and in communication with the Patriots, but have declined to offer further comment at this stage.

Under the NFL’s policy, a player formally charged with a felony or a crime involving physical force that could endanger another person may be placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, effectively sidelining him with pay while the case unfolds.

That designation has been used in the past in situations involving serious criminal allegations and carries its own set of ramifications for a team’s postseason strategy.
