Will Jadeveon Clowney make his Cowboys debut against the Bears? The latest on Dallas’ newest signing

The Dallas Cowboys made headlines this week by signing veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, a move that sparked excitement about his potential impact on their defensive line.

After joining the team, Clowney was optimistic and indicated that he planned to make his debut this Sunday when the Cowboys face the Chicago Bears. However, new information suggests that the team may be leaning toward a more cautious approach regarding his playing status this week.

Clowney has been fully involved in practice sessions since signing with the Cowboys, participating in all three days of practice. His presence on the field shows his readiness and eagerness to contribute immediately. However, despite this promising start, the team’s management appears hesitant to rush him back into game action right away.

Executive Vice President Stephen Jones provided insight into the decision-making process during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, as reported by Patrik Walker on the Cowboys’ official website. Jones revealed that the decision to play Clowney will be a game-time call, which indicates the coaching staff and front office are still evaluating his readiness.

The decision on Clowney’s playtime

Although Clowney has demonstrated his preparedness by taking part in practice, the Cowboys’ internal discussions seem to favor holding him out of Sunday’s game against the Bears.

Jones mentioned, “the lean is toward him not playing this week,” signaling that the team is inclined to delay his on-field debut to ensure he is fully ready both physically and mentally.

The cautious approach is understandable given Clowney only signed this week and the complexities involved in integrating a player who joins midseason. Last year, Clowney posted respectable stats with the Carolina Panthers, including 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks, proving he still has plenty to offer.

However, jumping into game action immediately after signing with a new team can be risky, especially when factoring in the need to learn new defensive schemes and develop chemistry with teammates.

By potentially postponing Clowney’s debut, the Cowboys may be prioritizing his long-term health and effectiveness. Giving him more time to familiarize himself with the playbook and to build rapport with fellow defenders can pay dividends over the course of the season.

This approach also reduces the risk of injury and ensures he can make a more meaningful impact when he finally steps onto the field.

In the coming days, the Cowboys will closely monitor Clowney’s progress during practice and gather further medical evaluations to determine if anything changes that might shift the decision.

For now, the prevailing sentiment within the team appears to favor patience, opting to hold Clowney out of the upcoming game while preparing him for a stronger contribution down the road.
