Why Russell Wilson signing for the Kansas City Chiefs would make perfect sense

The possibility that Russell Wilson could land with the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup quarterback is beginning to generate discussion across the NFL, especially as the team navigates uncertainty surrounding the health of superstar signal-caller Patrick Mahomes.

Wilson is currently searching for a new team after a disappointing stint with the New York Giants, where he started only three games and finished with an 0-3 record. The veteran quarterback did not throw a touchdown during that stretch, a performance that intensified questions about whether the former Super Bowl champion still has enough left to contribute at the NFL level.

Despite those struggles, Wilson‘s résumé still carries weight. During the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he threw 16 touchdowns against just five interceptions, showing flashes of the efficient play that defined much of his career. That experience could make him an appealing option for teams seeking veteran depth at quarterback.

The Chiefs need insurance at the QB position

Kansas City‘s situation may make the fit particularly logical. Mahomes is currently rehabilitating from a torn ACL suffered late last season, leaving uncertainty around his availability for the start of the upcoming campaign. Even if Mahomes is ultimately ready to play in Week 1, the team may want additional insurance at the position while its franchise quarterback completes his recovery.

The Chiefs also lost their primary backup when Gardner Minshew departed in free agency. That departure leaves a vacancy behind Mahomes on the depth chart and increases the urgency for Kansas City to secure a reliable veteran capable of stepping in if necessary.

From a roster-building perspective, Wilson could represent a relatively low-risk option. While he is no longer the $40-million-per-year starter he once was earlier in his career, he still possesses the experience of a long-time starter and playoff quarterback. In a backup role, his responsibilities would be limited compared with the workload he carried during his prime years.

Kansas City could be a reset for Russell

The move would also offer Wilson an opportunity to stabilize his career after a turbulent stretch. Going from a franchise quarterback to a bench player has been a sharp transition, and signing with a perennial contender like Kansas City could allow him to reset while working within a proven offensive system.

Still, the idea of Wilson joining the Chiefs has sparked mixed reactions among fans and analysts. Critics argue that his decline has been steep enough to suggest retirement may be near. Others believe that, in the right role, he could still be an effective veteran presence who provides leadership and depth in the quarterback room.

Much will ultimately depend on Mahomes‘ recovery timeline. If Kansas City feels confident that its star quarterback will be fully ready for the season, the team may prioritize a younger developmental option. But if there is any concern about his readiness, a seasoned backup like Wilson could become a practical solution.
