Why Myles Garrett believes in Shedeur Sanders as the Browns’ future QB

One of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers, Myles Garrett, recently weighed in on rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, offering a short, pointed assessment that captures both Sanders‘ temperament and the questions that still swirl around Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback room.

In an interview with Casino Guru‘s DJ Siddiqi, Garrett said simply of Sanders: “He’s pretty unflappable.”

He added, “The guy goes out there, he’s always himself, he stays true to him and he’s just confident.”

Garrett‘s comment appeared to hint that, despite an uneven box score in 2025, Sanders might still be in the mix for the Browns‘ starting job next season.

Sanders, selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, didn’t have a traditional development path.

He began the year buried on the depth chart and wasn’t slated to see significant action until injuries and roster flux forced his hand.

In eight appearances and seven starts, Sanders finished with roughly 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and doubledigit interceptions, numbers that don’t leap off a stat sheet but also don’t tell the whole story of a player thrust into a difficult situation at the NFL level.

Behind an offensive line that struggled mightily and with few established playmakers around him, Sanders showed flashes, moments of poise, mobility, and decisionmaking that caught the eye of teammates and observers alike.

Garrett‘s praise wasn’t the first time someone in Browns camp highlighted the rookie’s fortitude; head coach Kevin Stefanski has said Sanders “has made strides in a bunch of areas” and emphasized his faith in the quarterback’s growth through adversity.

Confidence meets competition in Cleveland‘s quarterback room

Yet for all the confidence Sanders projects, the Browns‘ quarterback situation remains unsettled heading into the 2026 offseason.

Sanders enters a crowded picture that includes veteran Deshaun Watson, returning from injury and still possessing Pro Bowl pedigree, and Dillon Gabriel, who served as the starter before Sanders took over due to injury.

The team also holds two firstround picks in April’s draft, giving Cleveland options whether it wants to reinforce the offensive line or continue its search for long-term stability at quarterback.

Garrett has publicly signaled his willingness to see Sanders compete for the job, but he’s also made it clear that no one on the roster is handed anything.

“That’s who we’re looking at as the guy. We’re going to give him a shot to prove that he is the guy,” Garrett said on a recent podcast with Micah Parsons.

“We’re not gonna give anyone that title until they go out there and earn it. He was the last person to be on the field, and you saw some flashes. So, we’re going to give him an opportunity to show what he can really do.”

And while Garrett‘s focus remains on winning now, he told interviewers his personal goal for the future is earning the title of “Super Bowl MVP”, he understands that achieving those aims requires stability at quarterback.
