Why Marcus Smart was fined and what it means for the Lakers

The fine imposed on Marcus Smart has become a focal point across the NBA, as there are those who believe that controlling emotions during a game is no easy task and that disciplinary measures could be slightly more flexible-especially for players whose impact extends far beyond the box score.

Smart arrived in Los Angeles with the mission of establishing a defensive identity that had been inconsistent for the Lakers in recent seasons. His résumé as a former Defensive Player of the Year and his reputation as one of the league’s most physical guards made him a strategic addition to a roster that is perpetually focused on the playoffs, but above all, on winning an NBA championship.

Smart recently revealed in a newsletter by Alejandro Gaitán the reasons behind his move to California, while also acknowledging that he had other options on the table.

“There were several factors involved beyond just basketball. Not only was my future at stake, but my family’s as well, and I wanted what was best in every sense. But when someone like Luka Doncic tells you he wants to play with you, wants you to be part of his team, and wants to work with you every day… that definitely carries weight. It was hard to turn that down. Still, there were other considerations. I was very close to not coming here and possibly going somewhere else.”

Smart signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after spending time with the Washington Wizards, earning a salary of $5.13 million.

What led to Marcus Smart’s fine?

During the Lakers’ 143-135 victory over the Utah Jazz last Thursday, Smart made an obscene gesture toward the referees during a stoppage in play. The action resulted in a $35,000 fine-one that does not alter his value inside the locker room, but does serve as a warning for a team that is striving for stability and discipline.

The Texas native’s frustration stemmed from receiving a technical foul earlier in the game after arguing with officials. It was a moment in which emotions boiled over and Smart briefly lost control.

This is not the first fine of Smart’s career. In 2017, he was fined $25,000 for verbally abusing a fan. In 2020, he was hit with a $15,000 fine for criticizing referees. Then in 2023, he received another $35,000 fine for using inappropriate language toward officials.

Now, with a matchup against the Clippers for tonight, Smart will need to be particularly mindful of his actions to avoid further disciplinary action.
