After Ben Roethlisberger retired as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback following the 2021 season, the team has not found stability at the position. Since then, six different players have started at least one game: Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Aaron Rodgers.
Following Mike Tomlin’s voluntary departure as head coach after 19 years, a new era has begun with the hiring of Mike McCarthy, a move that has generated mixed reactions, leaning mostly negative. However, McCarthy is a coach who won a Super Bowl with the Packers and consistently led the Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs.
McCarthy’s objective is to find a quarterback, and given his familiarity with Aaron Rodgers, there has been speculation about bringing him back for one more year in Pittsburgh, although nothing has been decided yet. For now, the Steelers have veteran Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, who will be entering his second year.
The Steelers have started monitoring Drew Allar
The possibility of Aaron Rodgers returning for one more season has not been ruled out, despite the disappointing Wild Card game against the Houston Texans. Still, the team must look toward the future, and reports suggest they are interested in Drew Allar, who a year ago was considered a clear first-round prospect before an injury hurt his draft stock.
It has been reported that the Steelers held a formal meeting with Drew Allar, the Penn State quarterback, which has fueled speculation linking the young passer to Pittsburgh. No further details of the meeting were disclosed, but there is no doubt about his talent, which is why he was projected as an early selection in the 2026 NFL Draft just a year ago.
Last season, Drew Allar suffered an ankle injury in early October during a game against Northwestern, which ended his season. He threw for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions during the campaign. He is now at the NFL Combine trying to convince a franchise to draft him – something that will likely happen, although perhaps not as high as previously expected.
Many things have been said about the Steelers – whether Aaron Rodgers will return, whether Will Howard will get an opportunity, and other speculation. What is certain, however, is that the team has its eye on Drew Allar’s talent.
