Minnesota Twins pitcher Kody Funderburk and his wife Alicia have opened up on the emotional battle they have faced in recent months after a worrying cancer diagnosis during pregnancy.

“Fundy has returned from the paternity list and we want to take a moment to share more details of his and his wife’s story. During her pregnancy, Kody’s wife Alicia was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After several chemotherapy treatments, doctors are confident that she will make a full recovery,” the team revealed on social media a few days ago.

The happy ending to the story came on April 20 with the birth of Murphy Jo, Kody and Alicia’s first daughter. But until that moment, the couple had to fight admirably against the disease for months, from the time the pregnancy and cancer were confirmed in September.

“Thank you all for your prayers and support. It means so much to us. While this stage of our lives has not been as we had imagined, Kody and I are immensely grateful for all the love, prayers and support we receive. We are constantly reminded of how fortunate we are every step of the way,” she said on Instagram.

“We caught it in time. We were just wondering, ‘What do we have to do?’ It’s kind of like baseball, you get to your process, ‘Okay, what’s next?’ ‘Okay, run that.’ ‘What’s next?’ ‘Okay, let’s do it.’ After concluding the pregnancy, and while his wife’s full recovery is completed, Funderburk has returned to the team’s discipline to try to help his teammates.
