What looked like a golden opportunity for the Miami Dolphins to secure their first win of the season slipped through their fingers yet again at the start of Week 3. Facing the Buffalo Bills, Miami trailed by just one score late in the game. The potential game-tying drive was underway, but quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made a critical mistake that ultimately sealed the team’s fate, handing the Bills another victory and leaving the Dolphins winless.
Following Miami’s third straight loss to start the 2025 season, head coach Mike McDaniel didn’t take long to assign blame. In his postgame comments, McDaniel’s words were measured but unmistakable. While he avoided naming names, it was clear to everyone in the locker room and those listening whose his message was directed toward: the team’s leader on offense, Tagovailoa.
It feels like a loss … We knew we had to not turn the ball over – and we had to play good football and make some plays.
McDaniel said. Though subtle, the statement was a direct reference to the costly interception that shifted the momentum decisively in Buffalo’s favor.
Statistically, Tua’s performance was not disastrous. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 146 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. However, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Miami opened the game strong, scoring on its very first drive. But after that early success, the offense stalled while Buffalo rattled off 21 unanswered points.
The Dolphins clawed their way back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, setting up a dramatic finish. Yet just as hope returned to Miami’s sideline, disaster struck. Tagovailoa’s late interception crushed the team’s comeback bid and effectively ended their chances.
Tua’s costly mistakes early in the season
Through the first three games, Tagovailoa has been unable to avoid pivotal errors. In losses to the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and now the Buffalo Bills, his turnovers have played a direct role in Miami’s 0-3 start. The lack of rhythm and consistency on offense has left the Dolphins struggling to find their footing in a competitive AFC landscape.
McDaniel’s message to his team
No coach enjoys losing, but consecutive defeats can at least serve as teaching moments. However, when setbacks pile up quickly, words often fail to capture the urgency of the situation.
I’m never proud of a loss. We came here to win, and I refuse to take moral victories as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
McDaniel said firmly.
Despite the mounting pressure, several players have publicly backed McDaniel. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was among those voicing his support.

Waddle stated.
Still, the Dolphins desperately need a win to change the narrative. Support from the locker room will only go so far if results don’t follow.
Their next game may offer a much-needed reprieve. In Week 4, Miami faces the struggling New York Jets, a team viewed as even weaker than the Dolphins. It could present the perfect opportunity for McDaniel and Tagovailoa to finally secure their first victory of the season.
