French tennis player Oceane Dodin, who is known for her powerful serve and aggressive style on the court, has now also made headlines outside the sport.
At 28 years of age, Dodin is struggling to regain her best form after a long layoff with vertigo problems, while at the same time she has decided to undergo breast augmentation surgery, becoming the first active professional player to undergo breast augmentation surgery.
Oceane Dodin, who has reached the 46th place in the world ranking, explained that she made the decision during a period of medical recovery, and according to statements quoted by Daily Mail, she commented:
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I took advantage of my break because during the season it’s impossible to stop for so long.”
A new beginning for Oceane Dodin
For almost nine months, Dodin stayed away from the circuit to receive treatment for the vertigo episodes that had plagued her for a decade and taking advantage of the break she underwent breast augmentation surgery, which also has a long recovery period:
I preferred to do it now and not at 40, when I have already finished my career
Despite the opinion of some experts about the chances that this breast augmentation could affect her performance on the court, the Frenchwoman stood firm with her decision:
“Everyone was telling me, ‘you won’t be able to play’. As if I had put watermelons on,” she said with a laugh. “They’re not small, but they don’t bother me when I play. There are special bras,” said Dodin.
When asked if she is the first active professional tennis player to undergo this type of surgery, Dodin was blunt:
“But yes, it’s true that I must be the first to play with breast augmentation; there must be a first for everything.”
Oceane Dodin breaks taboos in sport
The gesture of Dodin has been widely criticized, but also applauded and interpreted by many as a step towards a freer view of the female body in sport.
Even more so in tennis, which tends to be a sport not only of physical demands, but also where public image is often a constant issue.
In addition, unlike other athletes who have been forced to undergo breast reductions to improve their performance, Dodin says she has had no problems in her comeback. She is now back competing with an eye on qualifying for the 2026 Australian Open.
