Who is Charlie Smyth? Meet the New Orleans Saints kicker whose memorable debut vs Miami Dolphins sparked wild celebrations in small Irish village

When the ball sailed cleanly through the uprights at Hard Rock Stadium, the roar that followed wasn’t heard in Florida, but from 4,000 miles away in a small Northern Irish village. That’s where locals of Mayobridge erupted in celebration as homegrown talent Charlie Smyth introduced himself on the NFL stage.

Making his debut for the New Orleans Saints against the Miami Dolphins, the former Gaelic football player seized the moment he had waited months for.

Elevated from the practice squad just a day earlier to replace waived kicker Blake Grupe, Smyth stepped onto the field with the composure of a veteran.

His path to the league came through the International Player Pathway, but his breakthrough arrived on Sunday when he lined up for his first career field goal attempt – a 56-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Drilling it with ease, he cut the deficit to 11-19 and sparked jubilation back in County Down.

Irish NFL reporter Michael McQuaid shared footage from a packed Mayobridge pub, where fans erupted in wild celebration.

As Smyth‘s kick soared through the posts, arms flew into the air and cheers filled the room in what McQuaid described as a “mini Super Bowl.”

The atmosphere was so electric that locals were already planning to gather again for the Saints‘ upcoming clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A breakout moment for an unlikely NFL prospect

Smyth wasn’t done making an impression. Late in the fourth quarter, he executed a perfectly placed onside kick that briefly kept the Saints‘ comeback hopes alive.

Although New Orleans ultimately fell 21-17 to the Dolphins, the rookie’s performance stood out as he carried out his job to perfection, especially for a debutant.

He had waited patiently through the entire first half, watching from the sideline as the Saints struggled to move the ball. But when called upon, he delivered on both occasions and may have secured the starting role moving forward.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore was glowing in his assessment afterward. “Charlie, I thought, kicked really well. Big-time field goal.

“The onside kick obviously was really well-kicked. Phenomenal kick there and put us in a position to have a chance at the end,” Moore said.

“Charlie’s earned this opportunity. We have a lot of confidence in him. He obviously has the leg to make some big-time kicks. That (field goal) was a challenging situation, but it was a situation we needed to get some points there and he drilled it, and it was a phenomenal kick by him.”

The grind pays off

A standout kicker in the 2024 and 2025 preseasons, Smyth made all four attempts this past summer, including two from beyond 50 yards.

The Saints even sent him to Dallas midseason to train with a specialist, where he was seen hitting kicks from 65 yards in practice. With Grupe cut after two costly misses, the door finally opened.

The moment he learned he would start, Smyth immediately phoned his parents. Despite travel delays and multiple connections, they made it to Miami just in time to watch him in action.

“If we had to wait another three or four hours longer, I dont think it would have been possible,” Smyth admitted. “It was so awesome to see them here.”

For a village in Northern Ireland, for a family who crossed an ocean, and for a kicker who once played Gaelic football back home, it was a moment worth every mile.
