The NFL will experience one of its most innovative broadcasts in history on December 8, when the Eagles and Chargers meet in a completely animated version within the universe of Monsters, Inc. Under the name Monsters Funday Football, ESPN, Disney, Pixar and the NFL will join forces to recreate the game in real time from the iconic building of the film, turning Week 14 into an unprecedented immersive experience. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET.

The broadcast will feature NFL Next Gen Stats technology, Beyond Sports’ virtual visualization and Hawk-Eye Innovations’ optical tracking, allowing every play, run and catch to be automatically transformed into animation. The game will be available on ESPN2, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN+, Disney+ and NFL+, marking the third consecutive season of Funday Football-style broadcasts.

The broadcast reaches more than 155 international markets

For the first time, the animated presentation will also be offered in Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada, as well as a subsequent Video on Demand catalog on Disney+ for more than 155 territories. Meanwhile, the traditional broadcast of Monday Night Football – with Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge – will still be available on ESPN, ABC and ESPN Deportes.

This special version continues the legacy of Toy Story Funday Football (2023) and The Simpsons Funday Football (2024), which set a technological precedent in televised sports. For this edition, ESPN promises to once again push the boundaries of what is possible in immersive experiences for fans.

Mike and Sulley make their debut as match hosts

The characters Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan will have their first role in a sports broadcast, accompanying Jalen Hurts and the Eagles and Justin Herbert and the Chargers on a track reimagined as the “Cheerleader Track”. The virtual stadium will include thousands of cheering monsters, floating bedroom doors, the Scarer’s Leaderboard turned cheerleading scoreboard and classic Monsters, Inc. elements reinvented for the world of football.

In addition, the presentation will feature the appearance of Roz as a reporter, the intervention of the CDA, cameos of real players in animated scenes and a halftime show starring Mike and Sulley in the Cheer Canisters competition.

The ESPN booth also comes to life inside Monstropolis

Commentators Drew Carter and Dan Orlovsky will appear as animated versions of themselves, using virtual reality and Beyond Sports’ virtual commentator technology to call the game from the front row of the monstrous world. This innovative line of presentations has already earned ESPN Emmy Awards, technical accolades and international nominations for transforming the way audiences experience sports.

With advances scheduled in the coming weeks, Monsters Funday Football is shaping up to be one of the most creative broadcasts of the year and a new leap forward in the mix between technology, entertainment and live sports.
