What Mastantuono allegedly said to the referee and the harsh punishment that may follow

Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Getafe on Monday night descended into chaos, not only because of the disappointing result but also due to a highly controversial red card for Franco Mastantuono.

After another league setback, tension at the Santiago Bernabéu boiled over, culminating in a dismissal that could sideline the young player for multiple matches.

The match itself highlighted Real Madrid’s ongoing struggles this season. Despite maintaining possession and controlling much of the game, the Merengues found it nearly impossible to break down a resolute Getafe side.

José Bordalás’ tactics proved highly effective, neutralizing Real Madrid’s attacks and frustrating even the most creative players. As the game progressed, the lack of breakthrough weighed heavily on the home squad, who appeared increasingly desperate to find an opening.

Once the final whistle blew, the frustration erupted in a flurry of skirmishes between players, notably involving Vinicius Jr. and Getafe’s Nyom. Fortunately, the confrontations did not escalate beyond words and minor pushes, allowing Getafe to celebrate an important victory on the pitch.

Chaos on and off the pitch: What happened with Mastantuono

Amid this turmoil, Mastantuono became the central figure in the match’s most serious incident. The Argentine, who has seen limited playing time at Real Madrid, was shown a straight red card after a heated exchange with referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz in stoppage time.

According to the official match report, Mastantuono shouted twice at the referee, including the expletive-laden phrase “What a f****** disgrace.” Despite repeated warnings to cease his protests, the referee ultimately dismissed him from the field. The incident immediately drew attention because of its severity and the potential consequences under La Liga regulations.

Article 124 of the league’s disciplinary code addresses “attitudes of contempt or disrespect towards referees, officials, or sports authorities” and allows for suspensions of multiple games.

In Mastantuono‘s case, the likely ban is expected to cover at least two matches, mirroring previous sanctions such as the one handed to Jude Bellingham following his infamous outburst in Pamplona.

If a multi-game ban takes place, Real Madrid would miss the Argentine during a crucial stage of the season, particularly as the team attempts to regain its momentum in a title race that has grown increasingly precarious.

The club’s squad difficulties extend beyond Mastantuono‘s suspension. Álvaro Carreras and Dean Huijsen will also be unavailable for upcoming matches after accumulating their fifth yellow card of the season, infractions widely criticized as avoidable and “childish” by observers.
