What Kenyon Sadiq has to do to take over Travis Kelce’s spot with the Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs face a critical transition as they prepare for the 2026 season, with star tight end Travis Kelce nearing the end of his career, leaving uncertainty about who can take over while Patrick Mahomes continues recovering from his ACL injury.

Kenyon Sadiq, the Oregon Ducks standout tight end, is projected as a top-ten pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving the Chiefs a chance to groom a long-term replacement for Kelce, though he may see limited playing time early behind the veteran and backup Noah Gray while adjusting to the NFL pace.

Sadiq totaled 560 yards on 51 receptions with eight touchdowns during the 2025 season, helping the Ducks to an 11-1 regular season before falling in the national semifinals, showing he can contribute in high-pressure situations and create mismatches against athletic defenses.

Can Sadiq live up to Travis Kelce‘s legacy role?

Travis Kelce, drafted in 2013, has redefined the tight end position, accumulating 1,080 receptions for 13,002 yards and 82 touchdowns, along with 690 first downs, and setting records for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and 90+ reception campaigns, showcasing his elite consistency.

Kelce has consistently delivered in critical moments, catching four passes for 133 yards, including a 34-yard reception in Super Bowl LIV, as well as securing game-winning touchdowns in Week 17 of 2020 and the 2021 AFC Championship, demonstrating his ability to rise under pressure.

Sadiq possesses a 6-foot-3, 241-pound frame, a 4.39-second 40-yard dash, a 43.5-inch vertical, and an 11’1 broad jump, highlighting elite athleticism that allows him to create separation, win contested catches, and pose a legitimate vertical threat, similar to Kelce‘s skill set.

To take over Kelce‘s role, Sadiq must refine his route-running, learn how to read defenses quickly, build chemistry with Mahomes, and become a reliable target on third downs, all while developing confidence in high-pressure situations and adjusting to the speed of NFL competition.

Even if Sadiq starts primarily on the sidelines, gaining experience in limited snaps will be crucial; he must prove he can handle situational play-calling, run crisp routes, and block effectively, preparing for the moment when he becomes the offense’s primary tight end.

Comparing Sadiq to Kelce, there are differences in experience but similarities in athletic potential; Sadiq‘s vertical leap and straight-line speed give him a ceiling that could translate to big-play capability if he masters the nuances of professional route running and timing with Mahomes.

Kelce‘s leadership and football IQ will also serve as a model for Sadiq, who must learn not only the physical requirements but also the mental preparation, playbook management, and situational awareness that make Kelce indispensable to Kansas City‘s offense.

With proper development, Sadiq could eventually absorb Kelce‘s workload and maintain the Chiefs‘ offensive identity, giving Mahomes a reliable security blanket and ensuring the franchise continues to feature one of the league’s most productive and dynamic tight end positions.
