What Andy Dalton’s arrival means for the Eagles’ QB room

The quarterback room for the Philadelphia Eagles has long been viewed as one of the team’s quiet strengths. But a recent roster move has sparked fresh debate about the future of young backup Tanner McKee.

Philadelphia‘s decision to bring in veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has led to renewed speculation that McKee could become a potential trade asset.

Dalton, entering his 16th NFL season at age 38, brings a résumé that includes starting experience with several franchises and recent stints backing up Bryce Young in Carolina.

This kind of veteran presence is often viewed as valuable insurance for a contending team like the Eagles, particularly one with Super Bowl aspirations. But it has also put McKee‘s role under a brighter spotlight.

McKee, a former Stanford quarterback drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has spent the past two seasons learning behind Hurts and making limited appearances.

While he has shown enough promise to stick on an NFL roster, his lack of extensive regular-season tape has made his true potential a subject of debate.

Teams with quarterback needs are watching closely, and McKee‘s name has surfaced in trade speculation as clubs seek someone with developmental upside but some on-field experience.

One perspective recently highlighted is the pattern under Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who has shown a willingness to leverage backup quarterbacks as trade assets when it suits the roster.

ESPN‘s Ben Solak wrote that “the backup QB on Howie Roseman‘s roster is always in danger of being dealt,” and pointed out that McKee “typically looks strong in the preseason” while also flashing in limited end-of-season starts.

While speculation about McKee‘s trade prospects has been building for some time, the Dalton trade adds a new wrinkle.

Some observers view Philadelphia‘s move as a precursor to moving McKee this offseason, especially if it believes it can maximize his return while his perceived value is relatively high.

Other teams, such as the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, are reportedly in the market for a reliable second-string quarterback and have reasons to monitor McKee‘s status closely.

What this means for McKee and the Eagles

For Philadelphia, the Dalton acquisition solves an immediate need for experienced depth behind Hurts without committing significant draft capital.

That practicality could give Roseman more flexibility with McKee‘s future, especially as the Eagles eye both the NFL Draft and other roster moves.

Despite the swirling trade talk, it’s important to note that not all evaluators believe McKee is on the brink of departure. Some Eagles fans and analysts suggest the Dalton deal could simply be a strategic bolstering of the roster rather than a pure signal that McKee is expendable.

As things stand, McKee is under contract for the 2026 season and remains a young, cost-controlled option with experience in Philadelphia‘s system.

But with other franchises searching for quarterback depth and the league’s perpetual demand for quality backups, his name is likely to remain in trade conversations as the offseason progresses.
