Unrivaled League Format: How does the women’s basketball league work and what are the rules?

Women’s sports in the United States continue to grow by leaps and bounds. After a groundbreaking debut, the Unrivaled League has officially solidified its place in the basketball calendar. While the rules seemed confusing during the inaugural 2025 season, fans have now embraced the innovation that makes this league a distinct spectacle from the traditional WNBA.

The essence of Unrivaled remains: standing out from the competition. The league features 36 WNBA stars distributed across 6 franchises, offering elite competition during the winter months.

A major pillar of the league is the economic empowerment of female athletes. Beyond the massive equity stakes given to players, the league made headlines again in 2026 for its highly competitive salaries, designed to keep American talent at home rather than playing overseas.

3 vs. 3: The dynamic is huge

The core of Unrivaled is its 3-on-3 format, but unlike Olympic 3×3, this is played on a compressed full court with specialized rules. Stars like Angel Reese and Breanna Stewart have mastered this high-speed dynamic, which emphasizes individual spacing and elite conditioning.

The court is smaller than usual

To facilitate the fast-paced 3-on-3 action, games are played on a custom-built court measuring 72 feet by 49.2 feet. For comparison, a standard WNBA court is 94 feet by 50 feet. This smaller footprint ensures constant action and fewer breaks in play.

How long are the games?

Each game is divided into four quarters of seven minutes, a change that keeps the intensity high compared to the WNBA’s 10-minute quarters.

However, the most thrilling innovation is the “Target Score” used to finish games. There is no game clock in the final period. A target score is set by adding 11 points to the leading team’s total at the end of the third quarter. For example, if the score is 50-45, the first team to reach 61 points wins. There is no overtime; it’s a pure race to the finish.

Unrivaled fouls and free throws

The league uses a unique “1-for-2” or “1-for-3” free throw system to keep the game moving. A player fouled in the act of shooting takes one free throw worth the total points of the attempted shot. Players are still disqualified after six personal fouls, maintaining the traditional discipline of the sport.

The 1-on-1 Tournament: A Mid-Season Highlight

Beyond the team competition, the Unrivaled 1-on-1 Tournament remains the “crown jewel” of the season. Held in February, this bracket-style competition pits the best individual scorers in the world against each other.

The stakes are higher than ever in 2026, with the winner of the 1-on-1 challenge taking home a massive $250,000 grand prize. This tournament has become a fan favorite, showcasing the raw isolation skills of the league’s top athletes.
