The 50-year-old golf legend appeared in a pre-recorded video during Tuesday night’s Payne Stewart Award ceremony, where he paid tribute to longtime friend and former professional golfer Notah Begay III.
Begay was being honored for his character, sportsmanship and extensive charitable work supporting Native American communities and young people.
Woods and Begay have known each other since their youth, with their friendship eventually continuing through their college years at Stanford and their careers in professional golf. Woods used the video to reflect on how long they had been part of each other’s lives.
“Hey, Notah. It’s been an unbelievable ride with you. You first came into my life when I was 11-years-old, playing in the junior world and you came to watch me play. Our friendship has started there and never ended,” Woods said in the video.
He then focused on Begay’s work away from competitive golf, highlighting the impact he has made through his foundation and his efforts to help young people.
“To see what you’ve done off the golf course, I know you’ve won four times on the tour, playing in the President’s Cup … but to see what you’ve done off the course and for your local Native American communities, you’ve helped over 80,000 youths and their families, which is absolutely incredible. What an amazing job at the sports complex in San Felipe.”
Woods’ appearance draws a wave of reactions online
The message was intended as a tribute to Begay, but footage of Woods quickly circulated online and prompted a very different conversation.

For Begay, the recognition was a significant moment. The PGA Tour selected him as the 2026 Payne Stewart Award recipient in recognition of his character, sportsmanship and commitment to charitable giving, with the award also carrying a $500,000 grant for charitable initiatives.
For Woods, meanwhile, the brief appearance provided one of the clearest public glimpses of him in months.
With his legal proceedings approaching and his competitive future still uncertain, the video served as a reminder that his focus currently extends well beyond golf.
