2024 could not have gone much worse for Tyson Fury. Sure, he made plenty of money through two major events, but both of those fights ended with losses to Oleksnadr Usyk, who first stripped Fury of his WBC title then retained all of the undisputed heavyweight titles at the end of the year. The second bout was particularly one-sided, with many feeling that Fury simply wasn’t ready physically for it.
Fury’s physique has been a constant topic of conversation. A little while after Tyson’s father and cornerman, John Fury, came out to say that his son’s physical condition is what has been letting him down, the heavyweight’s “food expert” Greg Marriott has done the same. He spoke to Seconds Out and revelead he didn’t like what happened between Fury and his team during camp.
Tyson Fury’s food expert calls out boxer’s team for not getting him in shape before Usyk fight
He doesn’t believe it’s all Tyson’s fault, though: his team didn’t help him at all in the lead-up to the fight. The strategy, in his mind, was wrong.
I think what has happened in that camp, they overcomplicated things. Instead of making him super fit, they made things too complex. He should have never have lost against Usyk. It shouldn’t have even been close, because he is that good. But my voice will only go so far in camp… I just think for that camp, I didn’t like what I saw. I just thought this is getting overcomplicated and it came to fruition in the ring. He should have just been super fit and made to go do his thing.
It sounds like Tyson’s father feels the same way now, but John Fury is one of the main members of the team, meaning he didn’t take Marriott’s advice too seriously. John mentioned that Tyson’s “lack of muscle and body strength” is what hurt him the most in his losses to Usyk.
Tyson looks to be in incredible shape as of now. He has really worked on his body and continues to train constantly. Despite being in retirement, almost everyone is expecting him to fight again once the right opportunity pops up.
