Tyreek Hill’s future in Miami is complicated, and two teams will try to sign him: Patrick Mahomes will battle Aaron Rodgers

The Miami Dolphins entered the 2025 season with expectations clouded by doubt, and the opening week did little to erase concerns.

A lopsided loss to the Indianapolis Colts raised alarms about whether Miami is equipped to contend, or whether this season might instead turn into a long grind with more questions than answers.

One of the biggest uncertainties surrounds wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Still among the most explosive playmakers in football, Hill is under contract through 2026 but carries financial numbers that make his future in Miami complicated.

His 2026 base salary is set at $36 million, while his cap hit climbs to an eye-popping $51.89 million. That figure makes it difficult to see him finishing his deal with the Dolphins, and if the team falters, his trade value could outweigh Miami‘s incentive to hold on.

The situation echoes what Davante Adams experienced last season in Las Vegas, when the Raiders eventually dealt him after a disappointing start.

A similar trajectory for Hill is not far-fetched. If Miami finds itself out of contention before the trade deadline, the star wideout could become one of the league’s most attractive assets for contenders searching for an offensive spark.

Chiefs reunion and Steelers pursuit headline possible scenarios

According to Mike Florio, two franchises stand out immediately in the discussion.

Kansas City remains the most obvious landing spot. Hill became a superstar with the Chiefs before leaving in search of a bigger contract and a stage less overshadowed by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Yet ahead of last season’s Super Bowl, Hill admitted he sometimes regrets that decision. With Rashee Rice suspended for six games and the Chiefs‘ passing attack looking thinner than in years past, the timing could be right for a reunion.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are also drawing attention as a potential suitor. After a statement win over the New York Jets in Week 1, speculation has already begun that Pittsburgh could take an aggressive swing to maximize its window with Aaron Rodgers.

The team already features DK Metcalf, who signed a lucrative deal of his own, but lacks a dependable second option. Hill would instantly fill that void, and his speed would pair dangerously with Rodgers‘ ability to stretch the field.

From the Steelers‘ perspective, the locker room leadership of Rodgers, head coach Mike Tomlin, and other veterans could help provide the accountability needed to keep Hill focused.

The promise of competing for a Super Bowl might also ensure that Hill would bring his best version to Pittsburgh, even if only for the remainder of the season.
