Tua Tagovailoa’s late mistake against Bills has fans wondering if Dolphins QB should retire

The Miami Dolphins remain without a victory in the 2025 NFL season after a 31-21 defeat to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football.

The loss marked Miami’s third consecutive setback, with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa throwing a critical interception late in the fourth quarter that effectively ended the team’s comeback attempt.

Tagovailoa completed 22 of 34 passes for 236 yards, contributing two touchdowns. However, the late-game turnover underscored ongoing issues with decision-making and situational execution.

Despite solid passing numbers, Miami struggled to maintain consistency, allowing Buffalo to control the game in the final minutes. Tagovailoa, a 27-year-old former University of Alabama standout and the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, entered the NFL with significant expectations.

His career-best season came in 2023, when he threw for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns, though he also recorded 14 interceptions that year.

Primarily a pocket passer, Tagovailoa has limited rushing production, with 437 yards and six rushing touchdowns over six seasons. While capable of accurate throws and occasional high-yardage performances, he has struggled under pressure and in key situations, a pattern that has persisted into the current season.

Team performance and fan reeactions

Miami’s offensive difficulties have extended beyond Tagovailoa’s play. Turnovers, stalled drives, and defensive lapses have contributed to the team’s 0-3 start. Fans have expressed increasing frustration with the quarterback’s performance, questioning his ability to lead the team effectively and whether it’s time for him to call it a career.

“Tua might just need to retire ain’t no use of tryna play but playing scared and not being able to trust your pocket,” one fan wrote on X.

Another wrote: “They should’ve let Tua go last year and let him retire. The whole thing is just sad”.

A third wrote: “Tua stinks and he needs to retire from football.”

While criticism is mounting, the coaching staff has not indicated plans for immediate changes at the quarterback position.

Against Buffalo, Tagovailoa’s 22 completions on 34 attempts produced a 64.7 percent completion rate. He threw two touchdown passes and one interception, highlighting both his offensive contributions and the critical error that sealed the outcome.

Miami’s scoring opportunities were limited by defensive pressure and unforced errors, preventing the team from sustaining drives and challenging the Bills in the closing minutes.

The Dolphins are scheduled to face the New York Jets in Week 4 at Hard Rock Stadium on September 29, with kickoff set for 7:15 p.m. EST. Miami will need to improve offensive efficiency, minimize turnovers, and enhance quarterback decision-making to compete effectively in this divisional matchup.

Tagovailoa’s performance will remain central to the Dolphins’ hopes of reversing their early-season slump. While the quarterback has demonstrated the capacity for high-level play, consistent execution under pressure is essential if Miami aims to contend in the AFC East.
