Tua Tagovailoa takes full blame for the interception that sealed the Bills’ victory

Since Tua Tagovailoa joined the Miami Dolphins, one of his greatest challenges has been facing the Buffalo Bills. The young quarterback has struggled mightily against Josh Allen’s team, holding a dismal 1-9 record against them. On Thursday night, it seemed like Miami might finally turn the tide. Instead, a critical mistake by Tagovailoa helped slam the door shut, allowing Buffalo to walk away with yet another win.

Miami opened the game strong, scoring a touchdown on their very first offensive drive. However, their offense went quiet for most of the night until the fourth quarter, when the Dolphins fought back to tie the game at 21. With momentum seemingly on their side, Miami appeared poised to take control and potentially secure a much-needed victory.

But just as the Dolphins were driving for a go-ahead score, disaster struck. A costly interception crushed Miami’s hopes and shifted the balance decisively back to Buffalo.

Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard delivered the crushing blow. As Tagovailoa began orchestrating a promising drive, Bernard read the play perfectly, stepped into the passing lane, and made the game-changing interception that ultimately sealed the Dolphins’ fate.

After the game, Tagovailoa, visibly emotional and aware he had become the night’s scapegoat, addressed the devastating turnover.

Yeah, I thought I was in rhythm in timing of the play.

Seeing the flat defender go over the top of Jaylen and Jaylen’s is turning around. I think that was a really good play by the defender.

The Dolphins quarterback continued, reflecting on the decision-making process that led to the interception.

Ten out of 10 times before looking at that same thing, I think I still try to work on the timing of hitting that. I think the linebacker made a great play on that.

Tagovailoa’s final stat line told the story of a frustrating evening: 22 completions on 34 attempts for 146 yards, two touchdown passes, and the crushing interception. The turnover marked his third interception in as many games, underscoring Miami’s offensive struggles early in the 2025 season.

Tua’s message to the team

While Tagovailoa accepted full responsibility for the costly mistake, he also used the moment to challenge his teammates, emphasizing the need for greater urgency and execution in all phases of the game.

I would say there was, I guess, emotion of wanting to get this thing right for each other, right?

Offensively, defensively, and in special teams.”… “I think that the biggest thing as we kind of looked at this game, is when defense gives us those opportunities to go explore, we gotta go and put points on the board and vice versa.

With three consecutive losses to start the 2025 campaign, the Dolphins find themselves in a precarious position. Tagovailoa stressed that turning things around will require a collective effort, with every player fully committed to reversing the team’s fortunes before their postseason hopes slip away entirely.
