Trevon Diggs released by Packers: What led to the decision?

The Green Bay Packers have released Trevon Diggs, ending their experiment with the talented but injury-prone cornerback, following a 2025 season marked by limited impact and roster uncertainty.

Green Bay confirmed Tuesday that Diggs has been cut, signaling the conclusion of a brief tenure that never delivered the defensive boost the team had hoped for when claiming him off waivers.

Diggs arrived in late December after being released by the Cowboys, and while the Packers hoped his experience and playmaking ability could stabilize their secondary, that potential went largely unrealized.

In Green Bay, Diggs saw minimal action, playing just 33 defensive snaps in the regular-season finale against Minnesota and only one snap in the postseason loss to Chicago.

His time on the field was limited largely due to health. Diggs‘ availability has been a recurring concern, despite once leading the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021.

Since 2022, Diggs has played in only 22 games, hampered by injuries including a torn ACL in September 2023, a subsequent knee surgery in December 2024, and concussion-related time on injured reserve in 2025.

While talented, the Packers ultimately prioritized roster flexibility. Releasing Diggs, who had three years left on his contract, will save the team just over $15 million against the salary cap.

The move coincides with other roster adjustments, including signing quarterback Kyle McCord and defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy to futures contracts, signaling a focus on depth and long-term planning.

Packers lose defensive coordinator to Miami Dolphins

The Diggs decision comes amid coaching changes, as the Packers also lost defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to the Miami Dolphins, who confirmed him as their new head coach.

Hafley replaces Mike McDaniel, who was fired after four seasons and a 35-33 record, while the Dolphins also replaced general manager Chris Grier with Jon-Eric Sullivan.

“I believe great things are ahead for the Miami Dolphins, with Jeff Hafley leading the way,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said. “Jeff is an accomplished coach with a proven track record as a leader and motivator.

“He has tenacity and grit, while at the same time establishing trust with his players in order to get the most out of them.”

Hafley joined the Packers in 2024 after leaving Boston College and immediately improved Green Bay‘s defense, ranking top 10 in yards per play, yards per pass, goal-to-go percentage, and quarterback hits.

He interviewed for the Dolphins‘ head-coaching job alongside other candidates including Kevin Stefanski and several top NFL coordinators, before being offered a multi-year contract to replace McDaniel.

For the Packers, Hafley‘s departure underscores a broader organizational transition after their exit in the NFC Wild Card game to the Chicago Bears, their NFC North nemesis.

Ultimately, Green Bay‘s decision to move on from Diggs reflects a pragmatic approach, weighing injury history, availability, and cap space against potential upside.
