The Kansas City Chiefs‘ quest to erase the memory of a dismal 2025 campaign found its spark in an unlikely, yet world-famous, source of inspiration.
Travis Kelce took to The Pat McAfee Show to confirm that his decision to forgo retirement and sign a new one-year contract worth up to $15 million was fueled by watching his fiancée, Taylor Swift, redefine the limits of her own profession.
Following a season where the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade and Patrick Mahomes battled through a torn ACL, the 36-year-old tight end admitted that Swift‘s relentless creative drive provided the “juice” he needed to return for a 14th season.
“It’s amazing to see her keep going to the table, keep finding new things to write about, keep finding new melodies and things like that,” Kelce shared with McAfee.
“And on top of that, still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does-yeah of course that’s motivating. That’s motivating for anybody to see, let alone [when it’s] my fiancee.”
Kelce, who posted some of his lowest statistical totals in 2025 during the team’s 6-11 slide, noted that Swift‘s record-breaking Eras Tour and her continued chart dominance with her 12th studio album, Life of a Showgirl, made him realize he wasn’t “done either.”
Bieniemy’s return and a landmark backfield signing
While Kelce‘s emotional motivation came from his personal life, the Chiefs‘ front office has been busy providing him with professional reasons to remain optimistic.
General Manager Brett Veach ignited the 2026 free agency period on Monday by signing Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III to a historic three-year, $43.05 million contract.
Walker, who led the Seattle Seahawks to a championship just last month with a 135-yard performance against the New England Patriots, becomes the highest-paid free agent running back in NFL history.
His arrival is a direct response to a Chiefs rushing attack that ranked 25th in the league last year and struggled to find explosive plays in Mahomes‘ absence.
The organizational “reboot” is further solidified by the return of a familiar face on the sidelines. Earlier this offseason, Kansas City rehired Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator, a move Kelce accidentally hinted at weeks before it became official.
Joking about his newfound understanding of “Easter Eggs” since dating Swift, Kelce called the slip-up a byproduct of the excitement surrounding Bieniemy‘s second stint in Kansas City.
“The Chiefs are making moves Pat,” Kelce told McAfee. “We’ve got Brett Veach and Andy Reid going and getting the Super Bowl MVP… are you kidding me?!”
