Travis Hunter role on defense plays a key part in the Jaguars plan for the 2026 season

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear ready to take a significant step in shaping their defensive identity, and it centers on the development of Travis Hunter. Entering his second NFL season, the former Heisman Trophy winner is expected to take on a full-time role as a starting outside cornerback, with the organization leaning toward playing him for the majority of defensive snaps at the position.

According to Jaguars senior writer John Oehser, the plan reflects both confidence in Hunter‘s potential and the progress the team has made in rebuilding its secondary. Jacksonville spent much of the 2025 season reshaping that unit, turning what had been an area of concern into one with depth and flexibility heading into 2026. Now, the focus shifts from construction to maximizing the talent at the top.

Travis is central to that vision. Drafted No. 2 overall, he arrived with expectations of becoming a true shutdown corner, a player capable of eliminating top receivers and changing the way offenses approach the Jaguars‘ defense. While flashes of that ability were evident during his rookie season, the next step is consistency. The coaching staff is betting that a larger, more defined role will accelerate his development into the kind of playmaking defender they envisioned when they made him one of the first picks in the draft.

A solid structure around Travis

The structure around him is also beginning to take shape. Montaric Brown is projected to line up opposite Hunter on the outside, giving Jacksonville a reliable and steadily improving presence on the other boundary. Inside, the expected return of Jalen Lewis-who was a key playmaker before an injury cut short his 2025 season-adds stability to the nickel role. The development of Jarrian Jones further strengthens the rotation, while younger contributors like Deantre Braswell provide depth that the team believes is trending in the right direction.

This depth allows the Jaguars to put more responsibility on Hunter without overextending the rest of the unit. It also creates an environment where he can focus on refining the technical aspects of the position, from route recognition to positioning and ball skills, rather than being asked to compensate for weaknesses elsewhere in the secondary.

The stakes, however, are clear. For Jacksonville‘s defense to take a meaningful leap, Hunter must evolve into more than just a promising young player. He needs to become a true No. 1 cornerback, the kind who can shadow elite receivers and generate turnovers. That type of impact not only improves pass defense but also changes how opposing offenses game plan on a weekly basis.

The Jaguars’ big investment in Hunter

There is also a broader organizational implication. The Jaguars‘ investment in Hunter was not just about adding talent; it was about building a defensive cornerstone. If he reaches his ceiling as a lockdown corner, it gives the team a foundational piece around which the rest of the defense can be structured for years to come.

Health will play a role in that equation as well. Lewis’ return is particularly important, as his early-season performance in 2025 showed his ability to create plays and provide leadership in the secondary. A fully healthy and cohesive defensive backfield would give Jacksonville the balance it needs to support Hunter‘s growth while maintaining overall effectiveness.

As the 2026 season approaches, the Jaguars are making a clear statement about their expectations. They are not easing Hunter into a larger role-they are handing it to him. The opportunity is there for him to become one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. Whether he capitalizes on it will go a long way in determining how far Jacksonville‘s defense can go.
