The New Orleans Saints are entering a new offensive chapter under head coach Kellen Moore, and the backfield is already undergoing a significant transformation. After nearly a decade of building around veteran running back Alvin Kamara, the franchise has chosen to pivot toward a younger centerpiece by signing Travis Etienne Jr..

Before Etienne committed to New Orleans, however, several teams expressed interest in adding the dynamic running back to their roster. The market for versatile playmakers was competitive, and Etienne drew attention from multiple contenders.

Etienne revealed that both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos showed interest during free agency.

According to NFL reporter Jeff Nowak, that pursuit became less complicated once the Saints formally entered the mix.

Nowak reported that the decision quickly narrowed after New Orleans made its offer, noting that the Saints‘ involvement simplified Etienne‘s choice.

With a four-year contract worth $52 million on the table, the running back opted to return to his home state and join an offense in transition.

The agreement represents a clear commitment from the Saints to reshape their rushing attack. Kamara has long been the focal point of the offense, contributing as both a runner and receiver.

His versatility helped define the team’s identity for years, but as his workload and production have fluctuated, New Orleans appears ready to hand over the primary responsibilities.

Etienne‘s arrival signals a desire for explosiveness and fresh energy in the backfield.

The Saints are aiming to modernize their offensive structure under Moore, and adding a multi-dimensional runner aligns with that vision.

A wealth of experience and speed to revolutionize Saints’ rushing

Etienne arrives in New Orleans after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected alongside quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Their connection dates back to their collegiate careers at Clemson University, where they formed one of the most productive offensive tandems in college football.

His time in Jacksonville included both challenges and strong production. In 2024, Etienne posted 558 rushing yards at 3.7 yards per carry as the Jaguars experimented with their offensive approach.

The following season, he rebounded with 1,107 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, while adding six receiving scores. That performance marked his third 1,000-yard rushing campaign in the NFL.

His ability to impact both the run and passing game makes him a natural fit for systems that emphasize versatility.

With Kansas City and Denver both exploring the possibility of signing him, the free-agent market underscored how highly teams valued his skill set.

A statement signing

Ultimately, New Orleans secured the deal, bringing the Louisiana native back home to play in front of regional fans.

The Saints‘ investment in Etienne reflects both short-term ambition and long-term planning.

As Moore implements his system, the franchise appears committed to building an offense that can stretch defenses and generate explosive plays.

Now, with Etienne in the fold, the backfield hierarchy has shifted. The next step will be integrating him into the scheme and determining how his role complements the rest of the offense.

If his recent production is any indication, the Saints may have found a centerpiece for their next era.
