Nearly a century after the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, held in Uruguay, hundreds of matches have been played across all editions, and only a select group of legends has managed to remain relevant, accumulating appearances that are now part of the historical record.

Now, with just under 75 days to go before the start of a new edition of this tournament, we take a look at which players have taken the field the most times.

Top 5 soccer players with the most World Cup appearances

The current world champion, Lionel Messi, leads the list of players with the most appearances in World Cup history, having played in 26 matches following his participation in the Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022 (where he became champion).

With one fewer match than the Albiceleste captain, Germany’s Lothar Matthäus played 25 matches across five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998), demonstrating his leadership and reliability with the team.

In third place is Miroslav Klose with 24 matches in the tournament throughout his appearances in Korea-Japan 2002, Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014, where he was crowned champion. In addition, he is the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, having scored 16 goals for Germany,

In fourth place, with 23 matches, is defender Paolo Maldini, who participated in Italy 1990, the United States 1994, France 1998, and Korea-Japan 2002.

Rounding out the Top 5, Cristiano Ronaldo completes the podium with 22 appearances spread across Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022

Additionally, Cristiano, Lionel, and Lothar are part of the select group of players who have participated in five World Cup tournaments (2006-2022), a record they share with Antonio Carbajal, Andrés Guardado, and Rafael Márquez.

The list continues with icons such as Argentina’s Diego Maradona and Brazil’s Cafú, all with more than 20 matches played, a figure that reflects their sustained impact across different World Cup generations.

Thus, this ranking serves to remember and recognize those who transcended generations and left an indelible mark on the most important tournament on the planet. Now, CR7 and Messi could continue to expand their legacy in the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, and continue making history.

Top 5 players with the most appearances:

  1. Lionel Messi – Argentina – 26 appearances
  2. Lothar Matthäus – Germany – 25 appearances
  3. Miroslav Klose – Germany – 24 appearances
  4. Paolo Maldini – Italy – 23 appearances
