Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal, spoke on the program ‘Radioestadio Noche’ about the unexpected separation of Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero that has shaken the tennis world.
Relationships in the tennis world are difficult because the one who pays, which is the player, usually pays to hear what he wants to hear
“Of course it has surprised me, especially after such a good season,” said Toni Nadal about a partnership between Alcaraz and Ferrero that has generated 24 titles, 280 victories and 49 million in prizes.
Rafa Nadal’s uncle: “The logical thing was to continue, I’m surprised because Alcaraz finishes as number 1 in the world”.
Toni Nadal: “The decision I understand is Alcaraz’s, because Ferrero has said he wants to continue”
Regarding the possible reasons for the breakup, Rafa Nadal’s former coach said that “the decision I understand is Carlos’ because Ferrero has stated that he wants to continue, so I imagine that the decision is not tennis-related.”
I don’t think Alcaraz will be affected by this because he is a very good tennis player
“Relationships in the tennis world are difficult because the one who pays, who is the player, normally pays to hear what he wants to hear,” he stressed.
Regarding his relationship with Rafa Nadal as a coach, he recalled that “for me it was easy to tell my player things he didn’t like to hear because it was different, he was my nephew, it was a different relationship.”
Toni Nadal highlights Ferrero’s “good work” as Alcaraz’s coach
Toni Nadal defended the work that Juan Carlos Ferrero has done with Alcaraz over the last seven years: “At a tennis level, Carlos has to be very satisfied with the work that Ferrero has done in all this time.”
With Ferrero as Alcaraz’s coach, who started with Juan Carlos when he was 15 years old, he has won 280 of the 345 matches played (81.1% of victories).
“I would have liked Ferrero to have stayed because I think he was doing a very good job… I would have liked them to have been together throughout their careers because I think they both did very well,” he said.
Regarding the consequences that this break may have on Carlos Alcaraz’s game, he shared that “I don’t think it will affect Alcaraz because he is a very good tennis player.”
