Tom Brady takes Arch Manning under his wing and gives advice after nightmare Texas debut

The highly anticipated college debut of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning against Ohio State quickly became a moment of realism amid the hype. But Tom Brady has reached out with some important advice for the rookie.

Manning, the redshirt sophomore and scion of the legendary Manning family, completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

The Longhorns’ offense stalled, managing just seven points in a 14-7 defeat on the road. The performance ignited waves of criticism and cast doubts over whether Manning is as heralded as his pedigree suggests.

But amid the noise, a voice of perspective emerged-not from a college coach, but from the NFL’s all-time great, Brady.

Tom Brady outlines what Arch Manning needs to do

In a discussion with Cris Collinsworth on the Pro Football Focus podcast, Brady framed Manning’s problematic outing not merely as a trial, but as a rare opportunity to grow.

He acknowledged the downside-“the curse”-of being vulnerable to public criticism when expectations are sky-high. Yet he framed it as a potential “blessing”, explaining that:

“The blessing is there needs to be resilience built up in a quarterback as well. Even though he didn’t have his best game and they lost, if he uses this to his advantage, he’s gonna be tougher for it,” Brady said.

“And he’s going to have a better next game because of it. I always felt like you’ve got to deal with a lot of adversity from a quarterback standpoint to toughen you up to be the true leader for the organization.”

Brady also reminded fans that adversity can foster leadership and inner strength-traits he learned during his own modest beginnings at Michigan.

He emphasized the long road ahead for Manning: “Arch has years beyond this to still play in college, if he wants. But it’s going to be up to him to see how deep he wants to dig within himself in order to be successful.

“There’s nothing to show me that he won’t be that. He’s been that way in high school and even last year. And he’s got a lot of good people around him that know exactly what to do.”

A legacy under pressure

Arch Manning navigates burdens most cannot fathom. Born into the storied Manning family, he’s the son of Cooper Manning and nephew of Peyton and Eli.

None of his predecessors ever won a college football national title, and Arch entered 2025 not only as Texas’s presumptive leader but also as the top recruit of his class, a preseason All-American, and a projected Heisman favorite.

Yet such acclaim amounts to a double-edged sword. While Manning showed flashes of ability-including a late touchdown and red-zone mobility-he also visibly hesitated on easier throws, suggesting nerves played a role. His uncle Peyton’s own development is often offered as a blueprint for resilience-early struggles followed by greatness.

The game schedule now provides breathing room. With matchups against San José State, UTEP, and Sam Houston on deck-before re-entering tougher territory against Florida in October-Manning has time to recalibrate, build confidence, and apply Brady’s advice in real time.

Manning’s first full start in a high-stakes environment didn’t go as planned. But Brady’s faith in Manning’s ability to turn adversity into strength couldn’t be clearer.

As Brady himself endured setbacks before becoming a college and NFL superstar, he now sees in Manning the same potential-even through imperfection.
