Tom Brady criticizes Josh Allen’s offensive decisions in Bills’ loss to Eagles

The Bills walked into Week 17 needing a statement. Instead, they left their home field searching for answers. Buffalo’s offense managed just 12 points in a narrow 13-12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, remaining scoreless through the first three quarters as frustration steadily grew in the stands.

For much of the season, Josh Allen has been praised for carrying the Bills through inconsistency and injuries. His improvisation and arm strength have often covered structural cracks. Against Philadelphia, though, the Eagles dictated the pace. Their pressure arrived early and often, and Buffalo never fully found a counter.

The struggles were obvious on the scoreboard, but the deeper issues surfaced in the details. Protection calls broke down. Blitzes went unaccounted for. Allen spent much of the afternoon retreating, resetting, and throwing without balance. The Eagles defense made sure nothing came easily.

Bad protection adjustment there by Josh Allen … He’s in control of protections, he wants the line to account for a blitzing linebacker, but he picked the wrong choice. That’s Josh’s responsibility to get that protection straightened out

Brady’s broadcast analysis shifts the conversation

Calling the game, Tom Brady offered an unusually direct breakdown of Allen’s responsibility in those moments. On a second-and-nine snap, Brady pointed out a missed protection adjustment, explaining that Allen failed to properly account for a blitzing linebacker. “That’s Josh’s responsibility,” Brady said, emphasizing that the quarterback controls those calls at the line.

Brady expanded on the issue later, noting Buffalo’s reliance on five-man route concepts. That approach left the offensive line exposed against a relentless Eagles pass rush. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Philadelphia pressured Allen on more than 40 percent of his dropbacks, a number that reflected both scheme and execution problems.

On a third-and-15, Brady summed up the situation bluntly. With defenders collapsing from every direction, Allen had no pocket to step into and no clear throwing lane. Brady described it as “throwing out of a well,” a visual that matched what unfolded on screen. Pro Football Focus later charted multiple snaps where pressure arrived faster than expected from otherwise manageable looks.

The loss dropped Buffalo to 11-5 with one regular-season game left, a home matchup against the New York Jets on January 4 at 4:25 p.m. EST.

Look at these tackles … It’s a meeting at the QB. This is called throwing out of a well. You can’t step up, can’t go right, can’t go left … No way for a QB to be able to make accurate throws consistently

Tom Brady

Brady’s comments were not an indictment of Allen’s talent. They were a reminder of the margins at this level. In January football, even elite quarterbacks are judged by the smallest decisions. And on Sunday, those decisions made all the difference.
