Tiger Woods’ son makes outrageous start in tournament that could put him on the map

Charlie Woods is making waves at the Team TaylorMade Invitational, sitting just three strokes off the lead after an eventful opening round. The 16-year-old shot a 2-under 70 at Streamsong Resort’s Black Course, displaying both brilliance and unpredictability in his performance. His round included eight birdies, five bogeys, one triple bogey, three pars, and an eagle, making for one of the most exciting scorecards of the day.

Tiger Woods’ son started on the back nine and struggled early, opening the tournament with back-to-back bogeys. However, he rebounded quickly, carding an eagle at the par-5 12th and adding birdies at the 13th, 14th, and 16th to turn in 2-under 34. His second nine was similarly dramatic, featuring four birdies, one par, one triple bogey, and two bogeys to finish the round at 2-under par.

With only 72 players in the field, the tournament-part of the American Junior Golf Association’s 2025 schedule-presents a strong test for young golfers. Woods’ erratic but exciting scorecard has drawn attention from fans on social media, with one user calling it “an absolutely psychotic scorecard”, while another joked that his numbers “look more like a phone number than a golf scorecard”.

Like father, like son

Woods has already attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont, but his 3-over 75 in local qualifying left him seven strokes short of advancing. While he didn’t make the cut, his improvement from last year-when he shot 9-over 81 in qualifying-is a sign of his continued development.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, a three-time U.S. Open champion, is not competing this year as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon. His return timeline remains uncertain, but many believe he will team up with Charlie at the PNC Championship in December, where Team Woods previously lost in a playoff to Bernhard Langer and his son Jason.

With two rounds remaining, Charlie Woods is still in contention at the Team TaylorMade Invitational. If he can maintain consistency and limit mistakes, he has a real chance to push for the title and further solidify his status as one of the most exciting young talents in golf.
