Tiger Woods’ niece, Cheyenne, stands up after being ignored for her golf skills

Cheyenne Woods, an accomplished professional golfer and niece of Tiger Woods, recently found herself at the center of an awkward exchange when Grammy-nominated radio host Angie Martinez failed to recognize her golfing credentials during a casual conversation.

The incident occurred at a social gathering, where Martinez, currently embracing her “golf girl” era, engaged Woods in a discussion about the sport. Unaware of Woods’ professional background, Martinez offered unsolicited advice, suggesting, “You just gotta stay at it,” and even invited her to play a round together. Martinez later recounted the encounter on the “Par-Tee” podcast, expressing embarrassment upon realizing she had been advising a seasoned LPGA Tour player.

Cheyenne Woods’ Graceful Response

Rather than taking offense, Woods responded with humor and grace. She shared a clip of Martinez’s podcast recounting on her Instagram story, adding the caption, “We are due for a round!! @angiemartinez.” This lighthearted reply showcased Woods’ ability to handle the situation with poise, turning an awkward moment into an opportunity for connection.

Woods‘ reaction highlights the challenges female athletes often face in gaining recognition for their achievements. Despite her impressive career, which includes a victory at the 2014 Volvik RACV Ladies Masters and over 100 starts on the LPGA Tour, Woods has spoken openly about being overshadowed by her famous uncle and the broader issues of gender bias in sports.

In a 2023 interview, Woods addressed the tendency for female athletes to be judged more on appearance than skill, stating, “You need to be dolled up and sexualized in a way.” She has also emphasized the importance of being recognized for her own accomplishments, separate from her family name.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and respecting the achievements of all athletes, regardless of gender or familial connections. Woods’ composed and witty response not only defused the situation but also brought attention to the broader conversation about recognition and respect in sports.
